It was a lovely night and the conditions were reasonably good but for the neap tide. I started with the feed shallow but after two casts something jumped about ten feet in front of me. It was dark so I wasn't sure what it was. It could have been bass but I'd guess it was a sea trout. After a while I put on a silver kilty and something hit it first cast. It spat the hook after 5 seconds. I cast it to the same spot maybe 5 more times and kept getting knocks on it but no hook ups. I examined the kilty and saw that the treble hook had come off, probably since the fist bang. That's night fishing for you.

I kept at it, using surface and sub surface lures until something huge jumped to the right and behind me. Whatever it was it was big. As I was on my own I didn't want to wade too far out and the tide was filling quickly so I called it a night at that. I'll go back and give it another go soon.

Bass?

The nearly situation is just as exciting as the catch.. sounds like something like a Bass better look next time hopefully a landing next time.

There are big shoals of mullet all along the south Dublin beaches at the moment could have been one of them going splash in the night.

Ahh, that could be it but would they be breaking the water and jumping clean out? It wasn't just a tail splash?

As Alex said they can jump clean out of the water and it also could have been seatrout, Bass are more likely to smash the surface, hitting sandeel's or sprat's instead of jumping clean out of the water.

I went back and had another crack at it last night. No sign of life but the tide was out. There was a cormorant watching me through the dusk. I think I saw him laughing!
