Howth pollock

Sat Jun 21, 2014 12:24 am

People:me the bro and a mate

Duration:7pm to 11pm

Tide:full at 6.50pm

Weather:calm

Bait:spinners, sp's and feathers

Results:about 30 pollock and 10 small herring I think

Report:went to east pier howth and started fishing half way up the pier. Tried everything and didn't get any thing spinning so when we got to the top of the pier we could see what I taught was mackerel braking the surface feeding on shoal of small fish. So changed to feathers and bang ... First pollock. Then nearly every cast we were getting small pollock so it was pollock braking the surface after the shoal of small fish . Biggest fish was about 1.5lb we then started catching what I think are baby herring ... Correct me if I'm wrong but that's what they look like . They were very small. Hopefully next time we get a few better pollock but it was a lovely evening to get out and get a few fish on the light gear....

Busy enough session there, well done. Were the herring being foul-hooked, perhaps that's what the Pollack were feeding on?

No I was actually catching them in the mouth . They were taking the feathers. They were small
Feathers..... The herring shoals didn't come in till later in the evening. There were shoals of tiny fish and the pollock were feeding on them at first and then the shoals of herring came in. And then the pollock start chasing them. It was crazy . 6 or 7 pollock coming out of the water at the same time ....

I was using very small feathers with small hooks . Size 10 or 12 hook I think . And I was getting the pollock on them too . Was out there the other night and the herring were topping everywhere
