Report:It was a glorious evening and with the Bass ban in effect i decided to take the opportunity to try for my first Pollock and Wrasse of the year. So i made my way to a local mark that i have had some success with last season to try my luck. The weather was perfect, little or no wind with an incoming tide.
First fish was a feisty little 1lb Wrasse. I had forgotten over the winter what a good fight they can be for their size. He took the smaller of 2 minnows i had rigged together weedless and weightless. I love this rig because it looks very natural as it moves around with the current and small swell, and i believe the weightless presentation really helps with this.
I then switched over to a savage gear sandeel slug, the head was damaged so i cut it off and popped on a 16gr sandeel jig head. I spotted a rock about 6ft out that had been submerged by the incoming tide about an hour previous. By this time the light was beginning to fade, perfect Pollock conditions. I cast beyond the rock and started the retrieve. I could feel the jig head bump the rocks as it came over the top. As soon as it began to drop into the deeper water just on the near side ...... bang, fish on. My first Pollock of the season, probably around 2lbs at a guess. Needless to say i went home a happy man and both fish were returned unharmed to grow a little more for the next time.
