Last Trip of 2013, Louth Coast, 30/12/2013

Tue Dec 31, 2013 1:18 pm

People:Me with Orion for company.

Duration:4 hrs

Tide:3 hrs flood, 1 hr ebb

Weather:Strong breeze, dry, mild.

Bait: Fresh lug and frozen mackerel.

Rigs: 2/3 hook flappers, single hook clipped.

Results: 5 small codling.

Report:I dug some fresh lug and headed off to the beach a short drive away. As I was setting up, Venus was setting in the west with Jupiter rising in the east. There was a bit of surf hitting the beach and not too much weed. As usual I fished 2 rods, flappers in close and single clipped at range. The wind was strong enough to set the rods bouncing about in the rod rest so bite detection was difficult and I had to resort to retrieving every 15 - 20 mins to check baits. The close in rod was the only one that produced any fish and surprisingly, 4 of the 5 small codling took the frozen mackerel in preference to the lug. The codling ranged from 14 - 25cm and I was surprised no other species showed up as small coalfish and rockling often feature here, perhaps they were taking cover from the monster codling! Well, that ends 2013 for me, not with a bang but a whimper, who knows what 2014 holds in store....

I take it there weren't too many mackiebashers about, were the whiting of any size? Good luck for 2014.

No mackerel bashers around fished it in the dark. The whiting where between 20cm to 25cm. The dabs about 15cm.
