Floundering around Wexford

Mon Nov 18, 2013 2:32 pm

People: myself and Corbyeire

Duration: an evening and a day

Tide: all stages

Weather: great, very mild

Bait: fresh peeler, fresh rag, frozen mack and a bit of frozen mussel

Rigs: mainly 2 hook flappers

Report:

So i got down to Wexford over the weekend to target flounder, a trip that i had been planning and looking forward to for some time. met up with Brian (Corbyeire) on Friday evening and we fished from a pier - where we caught plenty.
i had some very decent flounder on the rag, biggest 32cm (my PB), and we both managed a few other species: flounder, dab, codling, small coley, whiting, and a fresh water eel. I must say that the flat fish were top quality, much bigger on average than what i am used to on the north coast. Wexford really does offer fantastic flounder fishing 8) 8)
but it was even larger flounder that we were targeting so the plan was to head to South Wexford the following day

met up with Brian again the following morning and at our mark the tide was approaching low water. i had a go with the fly to no avail (i could see another guy trying trotting with small plastics also, but he got nothing with them) and then later switched to using mainly rag. Brian was persisting with the fresh peeler and soon enough was into a very decent flounder. And soon after that again Brian had a real cracker, a flounder at exactly 40cm and weighting 1lb 12oz, it was the biggest flounder i had ever seen 8) the fish really were monsters. there were a few other fellas from Dublin fishing just down from us who had even bigger fish, definitely over 45cm by the look of them, and weighing around 3lb (so they said), bloody brutes of fish!

things slowed down for the next while so we moved location. again Brian started catching fish.. :P he had a decent double of flounder, and another one i think, and then a lovely bass of 3lb 1oz which he was delighted with. i, on the other hand, still hadnt managed anything all day. the tide started racing at this stage so we decided to grab a burger and to return to our original location to finish off the night. again, it was Corbyeire that took the reins. as the night drew in he caught another 4 or 5 flounder and 4 schoolie bass, he was doing well whereas i had blanked all day
nevertheless, it was just great to see some fine flounder, to get a feel for the place, and just be out and at it
i'll be back, for sure

a big thanks to Corbyeire for showing up and providing some much appreciated company/guidance. great stuff 8)

a few pics from the trip below

cheers

chuckaroo

ps. i wont go into the story of the guy who tried to start a row with me in the pub that evening... the woman who never showed up at my b&b!... and the fact that we were meant to fish again on Sunday but couldnt because...... my feckin CAR BROKE DOWN :!:  - i am still in Wexford waiting to get it fixed  deadly. some craic..

the fishing was great on the pier friday night and saturday what can i say - it was just perfect
trying different marks connecting with fish, in good company it doesnt get much better

the tripod being knocked by the bass was definitely the highlight for me!

im happy to report charlie got the car fixed and was back home late last night after his ordeal!

thanks chris. yes, apparently this is the time of the year when the fish are well fattened up after the summer and are getting ready to breed. flounder fishing can be done right throughout the winter
