Shannon estuary 6th September 2013

Sat Sep 07, 2013 7:40 pm

People:Myself and James

Duration:6.30pm to 11.30pm

Tide:2 hrs before high and 3 after

Weather: Windy but dry, first evening it's been cold in a long time.

Bait: Mackerel

Rigs:pulley and 3 hook flapper

Results: 1 flounder, 3 dogfish and 2 rays

Report: Headed for the Shannon straight after work. Brought my friend James who is keen on it but more of a beginner than me if that's possible. Caught my first ray here a few weeks back and was hoping it would work out the same for James. We weren't disappointed. Not much doing on the rising tide but once it turned it picked up. We both hooked into a dogfish each at the same time. I'd only ever caught 2 before and James had never seen one so had a bit of fun convincing him to handle it as the look of it was freaking him out!
Shortly after I hooked into a small ray another a half an hour later James had his first ray in the bag.
Got another dogfish myself about an hour before we left and then it went quite.
We were well happy at that stage so decided to pack up, besides it was getting pretty cold, summer is definitely over!

Also anyone got any good tips on how to get rid of the wretched smell of mackerel from a van/ clothes and hands?! Great bait but does it stink

Ok. In order to get rid of the smell of fish: a simple cut up lemon does the trick - if you like the scent of lemon obviously ;) otherwise I recommend scented baby wipes which are available in most supermarkets or filling stations on your way back.
But! - why on earth do you want take off the hunter's scent of success? LOL ;)
Leave it on and be proud of it!
That's how man are supposed to smell when they come home after a successful hunt to their wives and children :)
Furthermore, I love reports praising our humble doggie. For me they are a total nuisance and I'm really tempted to bite off my mainline after seeing the wriggling and snood tangling mess coming up. Some people love them for a wealth of reasons, for me they are just an excuse to change to another mark or go home altogether. However, anyone to his liking. I like the enthusiasm for reporting them, it shows you are not spoiled by opinions as mine yet. Keep it up and please, disregard my above comments. Well done indeed!
Congratulations to James on his first Thornie, it's not a real biggie but this spot harbours quite a few record breakers, so keep at it and we might see a new PB from you in the foreseeable future.
And, while I am at it, try for conger too, a mack head on a simple ledger rig with a decent hook on a steel trace lobbed out just off the stone packing normally does the trick. I've heard of 20lb'ers being hooked there recently.
Anyway, tight lines and keep her lit!

Thanks lads.
I had tried lemon and baby wipes already and definitely makes an improvement. A 5 gallon drum of febreeze is what's needed I'd say!
I'd be delighted with a few dogfish any time, anything that moves the rod tip keeps me happy. Best thing about Sea fishing is that you might have a good idea on what your reeling in but you never really know untill you see it!

Good report that mark fished exceptionally well in June when we were over, hope you showed your pal how to hold his doggie and not let him suffer the forearm abrasion that comes with inexperience
