Bray pier, Co. Wicklow, 19th August.

Wed Aug 21, 2013 7:13 pm

People: Just me.

Duration: 17.30-19.15

Tide: First two hours of the fill
Weather: Warm, light breeze.

Bait: Rag
Rigs: 2 hook flapper, size 6 hooks.

Results:Corkwing wrasse, shanny?, whiting, pollock, codling.

Report:
Headed down to Bray harbour for a few hours to use up a few rag left over from the weekend. The rag were nicely stewed after all day in the boot of the car (forgot to refreeze the ice blocks from my bait box  ) but it was a nice balmy evening so a mini-bash was called for.
First drop with my trusty spinning rod produced a male corkwing and the bites were coming thick and fast all evening. Had good craic watching small pollock dart out at sandeels that were about the same length as them. Managed about 7 corkwings, 4 shannys (Positive ID appreciated!) and a load of small pollock with a few very small codling and a lonely whiting. Nice busy session with baits being stripped in seconds and a great way to use up a few leftover worm 8)

Fun session there Sweetwrasse, yes it is a shanny; also known as a blenny. It is the common shanny, there is also the Tompot blenny which is less common and has 2 distinctive "antennae" above the eyes.
