LRF, Sligo Rock Mark, 28/07/2013

Sun Jul 28, 2013 11:41 pm

People:Me

Duration:3 hrs

Tide:ebbing to almost low water

Weather:Beautiful between the thundery downpours.

Bait:Power Isome worms

Rigs:3.5g jigheads

Results:1 small corkwing wrasse, 1 tiny Pollack, 2 x 50cm Pollack.

Report:
I had originally intended going trout fishing but strong sunshine and no breeze made a visit to the salt more appropriate. So I headed off to a rock mark with wrasse in mind. The sea was flat calm and I don't think I have ever seen the water so crystal clear. Dropping the worm loaded jigheads into various gullies produced only 1 small corkwing and a tiny Pollack with no sign of any ballan wrasse at all, perhaps the flooding tide would have been better. However I persevered and tried a couple of large pool like areas, nothing in close at my feet so I started casting as far as 3.5g will cast. Third cast, bang! almighty hit and line is tearing off the reel. After a great scrap, I slid a decent Pollack onto the rocks and measured him at 50cm, 2lb 12oz. A few casts later and the same again, another Pollack at 50cm but noticeably plumper and weighing in at 3lb 2oz. Fish that size are great fun on the LRF gear. After weighing and measuring I slid him back in and the very next cast Bang! again. This time instead of crash-diving for the bottom, the fish leapt clear of the water. Unusual for Pollack and silvery too, penny drops, it's a sea trout. A few darts and dashes followed by another leap into the air and he's gone! That was it for the session as in the background was looming a massive black cloud with accompanying rumbles of thunder. I got caught out in a thunder storm before and crouching down in a rock crevice in lashing rain for half an hour is not really fun so I headed back to the car just in time. I'm really looking forward to encountering some half decent wrasse on this gear.

Thanks Bass man 09, just a pity it was cut short by the thunderstorm!

Certainly beats hauling them in on the standard 4-6oz beachcaster.

Thanks Chuckaroo, the seatrout was about the same size/length as the Pollack, I think they're a bit lighter built so I would guesstimate 2.25-2.5lbs.

Rest assured Sparkey+1, coffee and sambos were consumed, I'll include such details in all future reports!

Thanks Creep, if I say so myself I'm ageing very gracefully. I'll see what I can do about a doggie for you next time out, that'll probably be on the hols. in Cork for the next fortnight. As for the wrasse, reading Fisherking's reply doesn't exactly fill me with confidence, again perhaps Cork to the rescue?

Thanks RockySXC, it was short and sweet.

You mean nearly always... I've fished 2 marks in the last month and no sign of any ballans at either, I think I'll have to grease the boat trailer axles and get afloat!

Great sport, I've only just started this method this year so still plenty to learn.
