Shankill - Co. Dublin

Mon Jul 22, 2013 1:35 pm

People: myself and Jordan.

Duration: 7am to 1pm.

Weather: flat calm.

Bait: rag & lug

Rigs: two hook and one hook flappers

Results: wrasse, rockling and a seagull.

Report:

went out and dug a bit of bait on Saturday to give Corbawn Lane a shot on the Sunday morning. was hoping I might pick up a bass but it might have been a little to calm for them. fished around 100 yards to the left of Corbawn we had a good few ballan wrasse and missed a few cracking bites as well. id say most of the wrasse were 1.5lb or smaller no real big monsters. I had just put back one of the wrasse when I noticed one of the rods jumping out of the stand. taught I was into a monster. but when I ran up to the rod to see what was going on I noticed a big black back gull tangled in my line. he had tried to get the fish I had just put back. after a good two minute fight I was able to beach the bird and free it. not an easy task. after that it went a bit quite so I moved around 50 yards to the right of the entrance where we found the wrasse again and a monster of a rockling never seen one like it before it was black as well. all the wrasse were a lovely golden colour as well.

Next time a bird is entangled in your line, throw a dark coloured rag over his head, this calms it down and it is a lot easier to get it out. Less scars to take care of too ;)
Not a bad result tough, considering the flat calm conditions, bass are generally hard to tempt when there is not much movement in the water.

I was going to throw my jumper over it but I didn't want to get bird shite all over it. :)

i think they might only be protected if you want to set out to kill them, knocking one out wouldnt be killing it :P i know they can be killed around airfields, samo would have had a perfect excuse to kill it with the air show happening up the road in Bray the following day  f  k the last bit rhymes

Never realised Shankhill held much sport, nice report.

How do you manage to fish the rough ground without losing a tonne of gear? Teach me ;)

That Seagull didn't have a Feed Shallow 14 stuck to his leg by any chance?

I was expecting to lose a lot of gear but it seemed to be just weed I was getting in. I was using 15lb snoods on a 60lb trace body so if I did get stuck they would have just snapped. stopped using a trailing hook after a while because it was constantly getting stuck and just fished with one hook up off the bottom. not feed shallow in his leg

this helped me, went down my mark when the tide was really low, if you can get a good high vantage point to look down over the mark. take note of rock features , kelp beds and whatever else you can see, then u know were to cast and were not to cast, then wat samo said sorted . good hunting
