Trip down the Shannon Part 2 2/6/2013

Sun Jun 02, 2013 10:58 pm

People:Myself, Joebhoy, Junior Conger, Joe and The Austrian

Duration:6.30am till 2pm

Tide:Last hour of the drop and all the up to full

Weather:Lovely with a bit of drizzle towards the end

Bait:Mack, Squid, Peeler

Rigs:Pulleys

Results:Great Craic, banter & a dose of slagging and a few fish to top it off :D

Report:After last weeks results a new plan was hatched. After getting approval from the planning department  the green light was lit. So far there was myself, Junior Conger and Joe, shortly followed by The Austrian and Joebhoy and Gearoid Mc S was also going to join up with us but unfortunately due to work commitments he was unable to meet us. So with bodies ready and location decided all we had to was to wait for Sunday to arrive. Put down one of the busiest weeks ever with work so this trip was badly needed.
I had arranged to meet up with Joebhoy at a local hotel around 6ish, with this on the mind i ended up waking up at around 3.30 and not being able to get anymore sleep   Met up with Joebhoy with my eyes welded solidily to the back of the brain  and off we set. The craic had started already with the banter on the way to the mark, this was helped by a good strong dose of Centras finest coffee  We arrived at the mark to glorious sunshine, got all the gear set up and baits launched. Managed to get a good bang on one of the rods but no hook up just before the Mallow boys arrived.
I tell you something, everyone should have a Joe Ganley fishing with them, because everytime i fish with Joe as soon as he starts to walk towards me i manage to hook a fish :D :D This hook up resulted in a decent doggie  Blank saved which i duely had to point out to Joebhoy, cue a constant stream of slagging up and down the mark :D :D :D At one stage everyones rods were rattling with doggies, i think in total there was a total of about 10 doggies caught, mostly falling to Joebhoys charms  i'd say at one stage he could have cast the line out with his teeth and managed to pull ina fish. During this stage Ruairi pulled in a lovely strap conger, Joe who was at the other end of the mark was having a slow day (sorry Joe) but did pull it out of the bag with a doggie late into the session, happy days , blank saved 8)
The one thing missing was a few of the thornie lads, the words were barely out of my mouth when to my left i heard the call, this is defo not a doggie  Joebhoy was in, up popped a lovely 4lb thornie, the missing link had appeared 8) Joe reset and just before The Austrian arrived had a screaming take on one of his reels. This resulted in a bigger fish that weighed in at 5lbs 8) and was also one of the angriest rays we have come across
While i went up to meet The Austrian Joebhoy unfortunately lost what felt like a bigger fish. Ruairi was the next on with a lovely wee thornie, at this point i had lost more gear than i expected and was looking at fish being taken on either side of me   When suddenly i got a belter of a take, this fish gave a great battle so i knew it could not be a doggie. What landed up for me was a lovely plump 9.5lbs thornie 8) Martin got set up and launched his bait, Martin had a few good rattles but unfortunately had no hook up, roll on the next outing Martin. The craic was mighty between everyone, even if the fishing did die off towards the top of the tide. Rather than chucking out anymore gear to decorate the bottom of the estuary we all decided to hit the high road.
The funny thing that happened during the session was that when i hooked the Thornie i managed to have my pic taken by a local who has a b&b so as to advertise the activities on the estuary on her website :D :D Hmmm should i be charging royalties
Roll on the next trip

Nice going lads, was down on the shannon myself yesterday for 4 hours and only managed one doggie and had one other good knock which I would say was a ray but I struck too soon.

Thats the way the cookie crumbles sure, I have a funny feeling from the pics ye were at the same mark as me too, I fished one rod close and the other at distance and moved every 3/4 of an hour to try and find the fish but it wasnt happening, I fished 2 hours either side of low though and I guess they move to different areas at different states of the tide, Had a few frights with either a bass or a sea trout jumping out of the water too while I was in dreamland watching the rod tip

We had the same today, thought at one stage that they were salmon jumping because a couple of the jumpers were fairly big

Lovely report Seamus, roll on the next session, I make sure to have fresher bait then, even your Tesco mack has outperformed these frozen stinkers from last year. My hands still smell fishy today :)

Hi Gearoid
We stuck to the further down spot as there was a festival going on up the road and we didn't want to become an exhibit :D :D Good old days fishing had by all, we'll plan another trip
