Fanad 26th May

Mon May 27, 2013 12:07 am

People: me and Steven

Duration:5.30pm to 10pm

Tide:high tide around 7pm

Weather:windy, few showers

Bait:none

Rigs:feathers, hokkai, SureCatch minnow blue and green

Results:2 coalfish, 1 pollock, 2 mackeral

Report:we decided on an evening of spinning as the weather didn't seem too bad and we couldn't be bothered carting all the gear down onto the rocks. We landed at the mark to find a guy fishing the next point over and he told us he had got about 10 coalfish.
So, on with rigs and blasted out, we tried different depths and different rates of retrieval. After 2 hours of nothing, I decided to open a new pack, a nice bright pink pattern.
First cast out and into mackeral, landed 2, one was a brute and the other quite smaller. Kept the big one and back went the other one. We thought we were into them but I got snagged next cast and lost the rig.
Soon after this, Steven got a pollock, nice size so he kept it for supper. After this I changed to the minnow in blue, I cast it out and on the retrieve, felt the pull, coley on but lost it on the rocks. My own fault. I tried again for about 40 mins but only a few pulls but no hookups, I changed colour to green, and straight away was into another coley but again lost it at the rock edge, this was were I started shouting profanities, I think I shocked the people fishing near us!!..
At this stage I was saying that I'm going to land a coley and I wasn't leaving until I did, a few casts later I got into a small one, back it went!
Steven in the meanwhile had landed another brute of a mackeral, and was happy out. Me, I wanted that coley and just as I was saying it, I connected and the rod was nearly out of my hand! It dived hard and I fought against it, after a breif scuffle and a bit of care, I got him onto the rocks, photo taken!.. Not the biggest fish but the biggest of the day!..I missed a few more after that too.
We tried for more mackeral but to no joy so I put the minnow back on and cast it out about 20yards, I felt a nip so I give it a wee twitch and bang, into a fish! It dived into a snag and I was in the middle of shouting 'fish on' to Steven when it all went solid, he said that it wouldn't be one because of how it went into a snag, so I let the drag out and fed it line, hoping it would swim out itself But after waiting 3-4 mins it never budged, so I tightened the drag and have it some pressure and sure enough, something had to give and a few seconds later, another coley broke the surface, it was a tad smaller than the other bu still a nice size.
The wind started to pickup and the light was fading so we decided to pack up and go home.
All and all it was a good evening out!
