co down rock fishing sat 27th apil

Sun Apr 28, 2013 9:48 pm

People: myself and junior

Duration: 9am to 8pm

Tide: in then out

Weather: 10mph SW dry and sunny

Bait: sand eel

Rigs: soft plastics, plugs, spinners and sliding float set up

Results: 2 pollock each with jordan getting the biggest at just under 3lb

Report: after rodbender not feeling well enough to join us today we decided to head out to the co down coast instead of up the antrim coast to do a bit of spinning. we arived at the mark to be greeted with favourable conditions and things were looking good :P :P
the only thing going against us was the water clarity. visibility was down to about 5 feet before things got too murky to see the lures, but we thought we would give it a good go anyhow.
well it was hard going. we tried every lure, spinner and soft plastic in the boxes with no joy at all. we must have gone a good 5 hours before jordan finally got a take on a little eddystone sand eel lure :D it was a decent enough pollock around 40cms and it gave us some hope that things might improve. but sadly it was'nt to be  . another 3 hours went by before jordan got the fish of the day who snaffled a sand eel jordan was fishing a good 25 feet below a sliding float. jordan was jumping for joy and his pollock was just an ounce shy of 3lb. so not only had he got the fish of the day, but i was looking at another blank
but finally in the last hour the fish gods showed some pity for me and a little pollock fell to the same lure jordan had been using earlier :P :P ( well i paid for them after all )   it might have been the smallest fish of the day but a fish none the less and it finally broke my blanking habit of late. so it was the most welcome little pollock i've had in a long time
we stuck at it and as darkness began to fall i finally got a better hit. the same lure did the buisness again and i got a nicer pollock breaking the 40cm bracket 8) 8) 8)
so we called it a day and headed off for a victory kebab before we lost the light.
not a bad day out, but i honestly expected a lot more from this mark considering the time and effort we put in. but sure, we got out. did'nt blank and got a bit of a sun tan to boot. life is good!! 8)

You put in a long shift for those pollack, interesting that the "old fashioned" Eddystone eel did most of the damage. The fishing seems to be slowly improving but there's a long way to go yet.

fair play for avoiding the dreaded b-word, and what a lovely day it was too! As I always say, it is impossible to loose out when you are fishing, you're always a winner, fish or no fish!

thanks man, we could have gone to a mark where i was sure we could have maxed out on little flats, but we opted for a change to try for something a bit bigger. thankfully it paid off :D

very true man. hopefully the water temps will get up a bit and things will switch back on again. as for the eddystone, it was the only white lure we had in the box that day. so i think it was the most visible through the murky water which helped.

cheers monkeywrasse. we normally return everything from this mark due to this particular spot getting hammered by lads killing everything from it. but as it turned out jordans biggest pollack was gut hooked and did'nt survive the return, so after some frantic attempts to foul hook it as the tide was taking it out to see belly side up, we got it back. (no sense in letting the gulls get it). but we did get 2 lovely fillets off it for sunday lunch

cheers charlie. i honestly expected more from the mark, but it used to be a good spot that few knew about, but now it seems to be common knowledge now

very true martin :D
we even got a sun tan believe it or not
one thing we did notice was loads of flocks of gannets flying over us throughout the day. i have'nt seen so many before. and they don't normally show up until there is mackerel about. so fingers crossed we can start to refill the bait freezer as things are getting a bit scarce on the frozen supplies :)

cheers man. i was just glad we had lifted the lighter spinning gear as i reckon our arms would have been feeling it after 10 hours of spinning
