Report:Headed to Cobh for the weekend for a nice romantic valentines with the better half and another couple. The plan was to fish, eat, drink, sleep and then fish again - In that order.......

Arrived Friday, weather was lovely so we decided to sort the hotel, grab a bit and hit the pier! The Hotel was smashing and only a 10 mins walk from the water. ( http://www.bellavistahotel.ie/ highly recommend it to anyone ) Being hungry and having women with us we were talked into heading to the town for some food and ( shopping ) which turned into getting bladdered before 8 in the evening. So no fishing. But after climbing into bed at 9pm I was awoken to a knock at 4am by they mate wanting to go fishing to help cure the head...

In lightening speed I was out of the bed, dressed and in the car heading to the pier in front of the town.....
Did'nt take long for the fish to start biting, actully from the first cast as the bait hit the water we were on, Coalies, whiting, pollock and codling, EVERY SINGLE CAST........ But none about a pound, so dident take any pics.

About an hour in I heard a WTF IS THAT THING!!, I seen this blob of a thing plonked onto the pier with my mates hook in its MASSIVE mouth and then noticed the tentacles on its head waving around, ALARM bells went off. Neather of us would touch it, not only because of the tents, but its HUGE pointy teeth. It turns out its an Angler fish!......We took a few snaps, shook it off the hook and put it back....

As always I cant upload the pics of it, so heres a link http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=239575122846369&set=pcb.239575739512974&type=1&theater

After an hour and a half and around 50 fish! we were using up the bait on tiddlers, so we decided to head back to the hotel and have some kip....

Headed back out then sat evening but it was much the same, another 50 - 60 fish all small but great fun!...... We left it at that and headed back to reality and the kids early sunday....

All in all had a great weekend in Cobh. A beautiful place and plenty of fishing....... Lovely people to.

Thats what we thought at first, but the guy from the hotel Kevin told us it was an angler. Them tents give a nasty sting....

Angler fish are sold as monkfish in restaurants and shops, hence the confusion!
@myworldfishing; Are you sure the tentacles can sting, I doubt it ?

nice catch! its defo an angler fish ,it uses the large spine/fin on its head as a kind of fishing rod the end of it glows in the dark and small fish come over to see if its something to eat :D and dissapear into that massive mouth never to be seen again  monkfish have a similar body shape and mouth but no fishing pole 8)

Nice to get an unusual species like that :D
And nice amount of other species too.

Yeah it's angler fish alright, sold as monkfish! Monkfish have a more shark like body and as roger said no fishing pole and I don't think as ugly!

Here's a monkfish caught in tralee.

Just for comparison;

and to confuse things further, the monkfish is also known as the angel shark.

nice catch with the angler fish. not too many lads will have them on their shore species list.

here's a cool video that shows how they use their "lure"

What anglers call monkfish are Angel Sharks.
What Fishermen and restaurants call Monkfish are angler fish.

So there no such thing as a monk fish!!!!!

Squatina squatina M. is a monkfish or angel fish ,and an angler fish is an angler fish so it says in the fish id book ,what resturants claim to give you on your plate could be anything including horse meat these days!

Guys its an angler fish, it uses the poll on his head to attract other fish, Like we do with a rod and then its just sucks them in....

It is not a monk fish.
