Report:I had arranged to meet Fishface/Neil Brown in Arklow to fish the dropping tide but on arrival I saw him waiting for me near the car park. "This doesn't look good

", I said to myself as I pulled up beside him, and I wasn't talking about the fact that he had dyed his hair, and now resembled an out of condition Billy Idol

. I knew that he must have blanked here and wanted to try elsewhere

. Perhaps Billy,,sorry ,,Fishface was attempting to regain his youth, which he never stops telling me was like fishing Heaven,,,,,you see he lived in a world full of Dustbin lid sized plaice,a land where 4lb codling were impaling themselves on his 3/0's all along the East Coast, and he needed a trailer with him when he fished a Comp, to help him get all the fish to the weigh-in

Once I got over the shock of his new Barnet, I asked about Arklow south beach. As it turned out , it was too rough down where we had planned to fish, with the waves washing over our usual spot

. We headed to Ennereilly and arrived to see a fine surf but at this time of the year we werent too hopeful of anything except whiting

I got talking to a friendly local and he offered to let me park at his yard just up the road, which will come in handy when there are actually fish frequenting these beaches in a couple of months

I got set up and cast out a 3 hook flapper into the wind, which was blowing towards us , more of an East, South Easterly than the southeasterly that was forecast

After half an hour or so we both had 1 x whiting each,so at least the blank was put off for another day. All kinds of tempting bait were hurled out into the choppy sea in front of us, from fresh and frozen lug, to squid, mussel, mack and crab,,,,,but the best we could manage was a few whiting in the mid twenties. It was hard to see bites with the choppy seas, but Fishface did manage a double of whiting and codling in fairness to him . I'll give the codling the credit for the noticeable bite,,,but he must have been punching way above his weight 'cos he was only a little feller

. Then came the inevitable "I've got 2 species to your one", from Billy Idol, and he decided to pack up

I should have left too but as usual I decided that after the long drive down, I was going to give myself an other hour's punishment,,,sorry pleasure,,,on this beach

. For my troubles I got another 3 pin whiting

Joking aside, it was good to get the beachcasters out of the rodbag for the first time this year, and also my first loss to Fishface is done and dusted. Onwards and upwards men, onward's and upward's
p.s. Fishface is the one wearing the orange Imax suit in the photos below
