Report: First new year trip (and first for a while for both of us), so was looking forward to getting out and clearing the head after a champagne marathon earlier that morning.....
Headed to my now traditional New Year spot of Ballinwilling, which usually gives my a species boost first day out. Very pleasant conditions. Nothing doing in daylight and indeed was pretty quiet until around high tide when we got a burst of fish with relatively decent coalies. Steven hitting them first close in on the lug (looking at photos he sent on, I see he caught a whiting too). I moved a rod in closer at that point (was fishing long trying to attract a ray or a cod with my alternating baits), picking up the whiting to my solitary fresh lug I'd dug up earlier on the beach. Picked up a couple of coalies shortly afterwards, one almost at my feet, followed by a doggie at distance to sandeel.
Bit of a lull then followed, the fish moved off as soon as they arrived.
Steven had to move as the surf was throwing up spray over where he was set up and so it proved fortuitous for him as he landed a fine fat flounder which was easily his personal best. Nice way to celebrate your birthday and the new year. Fished on another cast or two and then decided to pack up.
