Tide:2.5hrs up to high tide and 1 hr down

Weather:Dead calm and dry.

Bait:Fresh lug, frozen mackerel

Rigs:2 hook flapper, 1 up 1 down.

Results: 5 small codling.




Report:
Decided to give the Louth coast a go for a change and arrived down at low water to dig some lug. It was flat calm, no swell or wave and not a breath of wind. This wasn't very encouraging as this venue is better with plenty of movement in the water. On the bright side the lug beds here which had been badly storm damaged seem to have recovered quite a bit and after a few false starts, I found a spot which produced plenty of lug in a reasonable time. I also got about a dozen small white rag. It was still bright and the tide was barely on the turn so time for a visit to the chipper! Later as darkness settled (To Arthur!), I set up the first rod and cast out a short distance, approx. 25yds. Even as I was setting up the other distance rod, the first rod began nodding persistently. The close rod was aimed at any occasional flounder which sometimes show here but this turned out to be the first of 5 small codling. As both rods were set up, the small codling (is there such a thing as Pin codling?) continued to worry the baits both close in and at range. In contrast to my trips in Donegal, the mackerel produced no bites, all the fish were on lug. The mackerel did produce several crabs however, in fact I would swear I caught the same crab twice as it had only one claw and the markings looked similar too. In addition to the persistent bites of the codling, I got a few hit and run type bites which came to nothing, perhaps small whiting? As the tide turned and began to ebb the bites died away completely so I packed up still with about 40 good lug left; so do I freeze them down or try for Donegal on Wednesday or Thursday? Decisions....

Well done on getting a few fish. You're right about the mack in Donegal but bring the lug just in case

Nice few Coddies there, looks like thIS winter might be better for fishing than the dismal Summer we had this year.

You must have had sore arms after reeling them in if I had forty lug I'd be targeting Wrasse before they head off shore,there's some good size ones around now.
