SWFF Red Bay 23/9/12

Sun Sep 23, 2012 11:02 pm

People: me

Duration: 1.5 hours

Tide: high around 4pm

Weather: great. cold breeze

Bait: fly and spinner

Report:
couldnt pass up a great day weather-wise yesturday so quickly packed the car and hit the road. before i did though, i popped into the local tackle shop where i purchaed a bit of tackle and a nice looking wee weedless crab-style fly. decided then that i would try something different and target wrasse on the fly.
first mark was very quiet so i headed to another spot where i have caught wrasse before. i waded in up to my chest and tried again for a wrasse with the fly, but no takes. a wee seatrout jumped in front of me twice but i didnt bother covering him bcos he was no size. nothing there so moved on down the shore a bit. still using the fly but with a little shrimp pattern also on the dropper i was getting tiny little pollack on every cast. trying to avoid this i up-sized my fly but was still catchin them. must have caught about 15 wee pollack and managed one 1/2 pound pollack, that was about it. no wrasse showed and no other species. chucked a spinner from a cheap little telescopic rod that i had bought for a holiday but hadnt managed to catch anything on it, so i was trying to christen it for a bit of fun to see how it would handle a fish. never caught anything on it again tho! it'll come  there was a lot of weed in the water at this stage as the tide was very high and it was lifting a lot of crap from the shore that was laying at the high tide mark - it was was becoming a real issue and i had to give-in to it in the end, pity, bcos it was turning into a very fine day as the cold breeze had settled.
there was a comp setting up on the beach behind me as i was finishing up, wonder how they got on?
a quiet day but enjoyable. few pics below FWIW :)

Nice one, great to see a report up from you and lovely pics as always. The crab fly looks great!! I haven't bothered reporting myself as it seems everyone else from the North has stopped now for whatever reason.

Try the recent edition of Sea Angler for Jordan and his Ray's bream from Belmullet! What weight fly rod were you using Chuckaroo? After seeing the bend a good wrasse put in my 4-6oz beachcaster, I would love to see the knots one would tie in a fly rod..... Nice report and great photos as always.

Small enough alright! I'd say it looks good in the water.

cheers JW. yip, i saw that rays bream reported by Irish Angler. some fish, never even heard of one til then
the fly rod is quite heavy and fine for that sort of fishing i reckon, weight 8. have had some decent pollack on it and no major dramas
