Report:
Got a green light from HQ to get out for few hours. Decided to try a relatively new mark. It's pretty well known, but was formally introduced to me by my young nephews. Two young lads who are going to be great fishermen.
I've been there serveral times in the past month and have always seen big Sea trout jumping and suspicious activity at the shore line from mullet. However one time there I had seen large fish swimming aggressively at the surface, 10-15 yards from the shore, in about 4ft of water. Like little speed boats, leaving a nice wake behind them. Not sure if they were also mullet or bass, probably the former.
Working down the shore, a sea trout splashed at my lure early on in the session. Spirits were sky high, and my little jack Russell tail was wagging furiously. I began hammering that spot for about 5-10 mins to no avail. An apocalyptic dump of rain forced me to seek cover, losing the exact spot I'd been thrashing. Though, still a technical blank, spirits were still up, and had a "what if" in the bag!
I Progressed further down shore, giving the spot i fished at break. Determined to "seek out" the fish, kept moving down, but to no avail. Not until I returned back to the same location as before, did I make contact. Thinking I snagged bottom , the tell tale buzz off the drag told me I was wrong.
I had the drag set fairly loose, using braid and having a fairly stiff XLNT, I did not want to loose a nice fish. A lovely bass, my first on lures, gave an honest account of itself. My stradic fj 5000 also got its wings clipped. Coming in, then, peeling of out again, homer Simpson-esque would probably best describe its behaviour. I had no measure to accurately size him, but would estimate around 36cm.
If there was one, there'd be more. Focusing on the same area, I made contact with a smaller fish, but, this time, was certain it was my intended quarry. "Fish on" as Cyril would say, a decent sea trout around 32cm, and I was over the moon. Two in one session, a bass and a nice sea trout. The sea trout went to my MIL, as she kindly bats in my corner regarding my fishing excursions, and is also one of my main tackle benefactors come birthdays and Christmas.
The bass nearly didn't make it back. I had a huge palavour trying to unhook just one treble from its scissors. I can now readily see the damage 3 sets of trebles on one lure could inflict on a fish. I held it against tide for about a minute before it blinked first, darting away, like a scolded homer, "D'oh" ing as it went.
Ps, pics to follow on Monday.
