Red Tide Hits Rossbeigh, Co. Kerry

Thu Jul 26, 2012 12:40 am

People:A friend and myself we met an English chap and his son

Duration:20:00 00;00

Tide:Filling and Emptying

Weather:Very mild, misty with steady very light rain

Bait:Frozen Peelers, Frozen Sand Eel, Frozen Razor and Fresh Lug

Rigs:Two Hook Paternoster and very long snood Pennell

Results:Nothing

Report:Had some reports that a few Bass were being caught at Rossbeigh so a friend and me decided to give it a go. It is with great sadness that I must report that the red tide, which has affected beaches further north for some weeks now, has finally hit Dingle bay. The beach at Rossbeigh is littered with dead crabs, there were all types of crab there, Spider, Shore and Eatable were a;l there, I did not see any Velvet Swimmers, but I am sure that there are some also. We fish for 4 hours and never had a touch, hardly surprising, given the circumstances. The last Red Tide we had, 7 years ago, wrecked havoc on the lug beds and everything that could not get out of the way.

I would suggest that anyone thinking of coming to fish Dingle Bay make inquiries from Landers Tackle shop or any friends they might have there, before setting out. If Donegal is anything to go by fish will be hard to find if any can be found at all.

Regards Wez

Thanks for that Sean, it is so sad to see all that death for no reason, the funny thing about it was that you would have expected thee to have been hundreds of gulls feeding on them, the way they do on all the shell fish which are washed up after a storm, but very few were there. I suppose that you could say they had a belly full of them, but it had been some 9 hours from the last high tide and there were still such huge numbers for the crabs there that when first exposed it must have been a far worse spectacle. All we can do is to wait and see what happens over the next few days and that the lug beds are not destroyed like they were with the last one, 7 years ago, it is in the hands of God and all we can do is pray and hope for a good outcome.

Best regards Wez

feel your pain kerry wez.mayo got polluted with it,,,fished a local island last week with 20 other anglers and not a bait was touched,,,al that was got was dead sandeels and trout on the beach,,,very sad.however i feel the red tide has done its piece here and has cleared as the lug beds and cast are starting to show well again,,,,,i think its more to do with the fresh water now,,,,still a good bit of it around and not moving,,,enniscrone beach's surf the other day was even darker than heavy stained varnish,,no lie,,,winds for this weekend i think are in the west to northwest direction then going northerly with a bit of strenght,,,absolute no harm and will rise a bit of sea,,,bigger the better and let it act as a mixer first, then let it be a depositer,,,,,,,,,,,,the fishing on the boat side here has really picked up the last week,,,,,with fish being caught a few miles off 6 days ago are now getting caught closer to the land,,,mackerel are still a bit spotty but in better numbers,,,hopefully these good shoals of mackerel will chase those shoals of sandeels back into the beaches and channels and bring our beach fish back to the shorelines.wont be long now before the sprat make apperance in larger numbers so all is not dead yet i hope,,,,,hope we have a good end to the summer with fantastic reports on here,,,,,my first outing is next saturday in a boat comp so for the first time i hope to see these signs of improvement with my very own two eyes,,,,

Had a visitor call with me today and he fished Inch last night, with 20 members of the club he is in and not one of them had a touch in the full 5 hours, they fished from 7 till 12. You would have thought that something would have taken, if there was anything there, but it would seem obvious that there was nothing there. All the fish will have moved well off into deeper water where the are safe from the red tide.

That's bad news Wez, something amiss if nothing was caught on Inch with all those anglers, I tried the rocks last Wed eve on Rossbeigh, managed a couple of small Bass early on but it was not easy, hope it's not as bad as the last time!
