Went out tonite hoping for a much needed bass fix, got to the mark 8.30pm water was well coloured after the gales of the last 2 days with the wind now blowing in the opposite direction it was taking the sting out of the surf, anyways straight into a doggie fest normally this mark throws up a few doggies but never this many mustve had 10 before i got a nice huss about 5lb a first for me here.. Dusk came and went no bass peelers running low, the tide started pushing back in another lad i was fishing with decided to move 300 yards up the beach so i put about 4 peelers on a 4/0 last throw of the dice before home. Got a really strong knock missed it reeled it in tidied up the bait and cast again same spot about 60yards out within minutes massive knock reeled into it big bass on i thought/ hoped after a good struggle got it in was fairly shocked to see it, thought myself it was a tope because of the see - through snout and overly large fins and length so took a run up the beach to the other lad whose a very accomplished fisherman and he confirmed it as a tope. Took about 10 photos of it but they generally turned out crap reckon it weighted in about 7-8lb so still a baby but im well happy dont think i will hooking one of them to often not in west waterford anyways

When you unhooked it did it have teeth? then tope, hounds have crushing pads.

Wow! Whether it's a tope or a smoothhound, it's a cracking result. Never heard of either in the west Waterford direction. If only they'd come en masse there'd be some good sport to be had, with one rod out for the bass, and the other out for the hounds ...
