Portrush 10th June 2012

Sun Jun 10, 2012 5:12 pm

People: Just me

Duration: 9.30 'til 3.30

Tide: filling, HW & falling

Weather: Dull to start with and showers to gloriously sunny and warm

Bait: mackerel & sandeel

Rigs: Feather lure and floated hooks

Results: 3 Pollock

Report: Usual wingman Nial K again not available so the Blue Pool again came into play. No funny rigs this time, one rod out with a baited hook suspended under a 40g Drennan Piker float and the other with a feather lure rig.

I was out a couple of hours before any fish were caught at the venue by anyone and then a mackerel shoal appeared. My feather rig was getting loads of hits but didn't hook any of them

A big surprise then came when I bagged a nice Pollock (pictured below) on the feather rig close in to the rocks.

Two more Pollock fell to the floated hook within the next hour however there wern't of the same standard.

At this stage the venue was starting to get busy with day fishers and I was getting might sunburnt  so I called it a day.

Happy with the days fishing though, nice weather and 3 fish caught :D

It's hard to understand how you can get lots of hits on feathers yet not hook any, until one day last year I was boat fishing in shallow water. I saw mackerel swimming past and dropped a set of feathers into the water. I could feel lots of hits but no hook-ups; when I looked down into the water I could see the mackerel going for the lead but ignoring the feathers!

Might have a point dude but it was probably more to do with my complete lack of knowledge on how to fish with feather rigs

I have since taken advice from a master basher  and will have a rematch with the mackies in the middle of the week from the same mark :)

Hope it works,
Monty

Couple of Polish lads hammered away for a few hours and caught very little plus a caravan visitor from Banbridge who took two fat mackerel on a spinning rod which according to him hadn't seen the light of day since last year (lucky git)

A couple of families arrived at 3pm and one of the sons took out a nice pollock almost immediately.

Good day to be out,
Monty
