Kerry - Brandon - 27 Bass...!

Mon May 14, 2012 10:15 am

People: Me, bro in law and 2 mates

Duration: Thur til Sun Morning

Tide: High morning and evening from 8pm thur til 10 ish Saturday

Weather: Cracking..!

Bait: Lug and Lures

Rigs: Single hook, short snood, 4/0

Results: 27 bass, 10 pollock a few flounder.

Report:
A belter of a weekend from all aspects, Fishing was brilliant, banter, beer, had it all. So most of our fishing was on the evening tide at our usual bait mark. I cant give it away but if it helps anyone looking for a good mark to try, shallow water, good water movement, patches of sand amongst rocky ground. Typical bass ground. Fish were not big, we did have a handful of bass to approx 4Ib. Action was non stop. Ye had to be quick as the knock when it came either resulted in a fish or a stripped hook.
We tried lures in the morning session, was slow enough. Only one bass on a lure. I had a pollock approx 4Ib in weight on Sat morning, savage fight as I belted out a kilty lure, wind assisted. About 3 turns later the rod buckled over. Gave a great account of itself. I was out on rock and my camera was about 30 ft behind me.! DOH..!
Didnt see any sign of sea trout. We dont target them but we usually see plenty jumping and hook the odd one. Very surprising.
All in all though another cracking weekend in Brandon. Big thanks to our host too who gave us 3 lobsters FOC..! Yum..!

I have attached a few pics, same aul same aul really..!! :-)

Naw, as you can see from the report i wasn't after the bass this time. You only caught all the tiddlers as you call them because all the big ones are off making baby bass. :D

Cheers lads, really was a great weekend. Not just the fishing, lets be fair they werent the biggest bass ever. The surprising thing was so many of them had milt. So im not entirely sure at what age/size they spawn but clearly some of the 2Ib'ers to 3Iber's were definitly spawn condition males. All returned obviously. Two bass were kept on humane grounds, hooks swallowed deep with no indication of a fish on until we reeled in to discover a fish on. Luckily these fish were larger and had no sign of milt or more importantly eggs.
But it really enforced my belief that the bass ban is a great thing for the species. If nothing else to give them a break before or after spawning.

Brilliant fishing, we were over the other side. Brandon Bay is an awesome place. Caught the biggest mackerel there two years ago.

Its so sad, the place used to be thick with them when we started going over 14 years ago. These days we catch more bass than macks..! They have really declined. We used to have great sport on light spinning rods if the bass were absent. Nearly a mack a cast.

It really was, the thing is we know there are clonkers there. We have seen em etc, we just havent hooked up with any. Would love to live there for a year and really study the area. We pick a weekend and hope for the best with the conditions etc, if you lived there and coild fish when ye liked you could pull some serious fish out of it. I once had a follow from a massive fish on the popper. One night too we saw a massive bass attacking mackeral on the surface. Stuf dreams are made of. My bro in law lost a huge fish too one night. To be honest we didnt really want to catch the smaller bass (1 to 3Ib), we didnt fish the mark on Sat night.
