We were off work for the day so we decided to try kilcoole as we hadn't fished it for a while but after a few casts the weed became a bit of a pain! We tried all distances and bait combinations but no fish were to be had for a while. Mick had been wanting to try out one of his personalised rigs for a while so it came out of the box and got put to the test. Shortly afterwards he reeled in a nice 32 cm flounder. Over the next hour or that he caught another 2 flatties with 2 out of the 3 coming to his rig so he was chuffed with that. On the other hand however I could do no right and nothing I tried worked. I was even contemplating heading to greystones pier to at least catch a few fish but as the tide started pushing in properly I started connecting with a few fish. The fishing cracked on fairly well for the next few hours and turned into a fairly decent session after a bad start. Altogether I reckon we had close to 12 flatties, 20 or more whiting with most of them over 20cm

, 1 coley and about ten doggies. I reckon my best catch in micks opinion was about an hour after he lost his rig in a snag, I reeled it in on my own line
Just something we tried out after we caught some of the whiting was releasing then in a gulley by our feet which some of the larger waves were filling and they practically all went belly up, as I always see when I return them to the sea ......... BUT after 3 or 4 minutes they got going again and swam back out healthy and none the worse for their ordeal. I had presumed all the whiting during comps etc were killed but hopefully I was wrong. It was great to see the small flounders darting around the gulley too. All in all an enjoyable night
