Decided it was getting to be that time again so headed to blackhead on a conger hunt, really wasnt expecting much as low tide went right down to 0.0 on the tide charts which meant there would be a strong enough rip in the tide on the way in to put them off. Left the house and stopped off at B&M on the way to pick up the "predator" rod they are selling, its cheap, its crap, its 11ft and pretty light so perfect for float fishing for pollock and coalies i thought. Landed down and got the float out first, due to the tide beinga lot lower than normally i set it a bit over depth by mistake and got a starfish on the first cast. Put out 2 conger rods to increase my chances and left them to their own devices, periodically changing their baits. To start the fishing was slow, by slow i mean no fish or bites. Passed the time spinning with firetails while watching the float, water was pretty coloured so wasnt expecting anything spinning but it was something to do while waiting for dark. Neither method produced for the first hour except for one hit on the firetail where a nice wee pollock probably around the pound mark hammered it on the surface just as i was about to lift it out of the water, fortunately no hook up but the first sign of life definitely got the spirits up. Not long after i got the first coalie on the float, blank saved

, then another then nothing, it was about 730 by this time and didnt get another fish until about 845. Then, as seems to be the way up there the fish came on the feed and were hammering my baits, over the next hour or so i pulled out another 10 or so pollock and coalies up to 32cm, then as quickly as they appeared they disappeared again. After another half an hour of no bites i went home content. The B&M rod performed exactly as expected and am pleased with it, for £20 you get what you pay for so dont expect it to last, if i get a year out of it ill be happy, but boy do i love float fishing for wrasse pollock and coalies on cheap crap rods

. didnt get a sniff on the conger rods the whole night, not even crabs, just one cheeky starfish,
