Report:

Hi Lads,

This is a first time report from a newbie. Been reading a lot of reports lately so thought it was time to chip in with one of my own.

I had decided early in the week that I'd try and get fishing at some stage over Paddy's weekend to break up the beering that I would be inevitably be taking part in. So come Sunday I packed up the car and headed for Spiddal pier. I don't know of many marks around Galway city but had been out here before and had had some success. I arrived out about one hour before high tide and set up two rods, one just off the end of the pier and the other about 20-30m out. I used 2 hook (size 4s) flappers loaded with lug and tipped with mac. I was hoping to attract a few flatties with the rod further out and perhaps target a few mini species off the end of the pier. A fool proof way of avoiding the blank.. or so I thought! I fished for about 4 hours without so much as a bite before packing up and heading for home. No fish but was happy to get out in the fresh air for a few hours.

Am I wasting my time trying Spiddal pier at this time of year?

A couple of weeks ago I went to Furbo and Spiddal Beach but was so clogged with weeds that I packed up and headed for home after only a couple of hours. While driving though Salthill I decided that I'd have a cast of two off the end of the jetty with some of the lug and mac that was sitting in the boot of the car. It was dark at this stage, probably around 7.30pm and was at high tide. I was getting plenty of small knocks but I think that my hooks were too big for the job (size 2/0). I hung around for about 2 hours and did eventually manage to get myself a rocking of some sort. I don't know the species type so have attached an image. Any help with identification would be appreciated. Based on the problem with hooking the fish on this session I changed to hook size 4 for my outing to Spiddal pier and will persist with them for the next session.

Cheers for the info lads. That is the first shore rockling I have ever caught. Hopefully I'll add a few more species to the list this year!!
