Killiney / Greystones
Well had a meet in Killiney with a few friends Orginalsin, Miami, Rory & crew, Turned out Killiney wasn’t fishin well BUT the crack was mighty.. the laughs .. being out in the sun, kicking back on the tackle box enjoying the day, as soon as night came though the Pin whiting were back on the feed, as were their cousins the rockling.
At around 11ish we made tracks for Greystones just to see what the fun was to be had there, and we weren’t disappointed first cast in Pouting out, then coalies, pouting, and more coalies with a dash of Pollock. I thinks there may have been one whiting caught.


Sunday HOWTH
Were do I start with this... as I had bait left over decided to hit somewhere local, wasn’t up for a mad drive this time. Hopped into the car and made my way to the cliffs.. Got out of the car and notice a new Tackle/ tea/ coffee shop had opened at the top of the cliffs second car park, as I made my way over to the tracks of the cliff I noticed every known mark was full of F/Ns feathering away, in fact witness two Joey, macks been kept. When I asked if they caught anything “I don’t know!” But as I made my way over to the cliffs it struck me the amount of litter is beyond a joke, empty beer cans, tackle packets, mono, broken rods, thrown around the place is sickening, even seen a dead dog wrapped in a blanket .. (purple blanket in picture), I made my way up to the lions head to suss out if there was any marks I could fish in peace as I haven’t been out by myself in an age, and nope even the Lions Head was packed and I must say some lads there were taking serious risks on that mark.

So I picked my way back to the car was about to go when I saw a gang of f/ns lads ready to go home, again being polite any joy? “ NO, no ask” fair enough me thoughts and a good evening to you too (rhythms with trick)… grabbed the gear and made my way through the litter to the mark, was then I noticed the POTS… hell whoever set these pots had no fear, 15-20 foot out from the cliff. But still it was fishable (I know the way the current runs there makes life easy).. had both rods set out, sitting back chattin to a mate on the phone when over my head came a rock… I apologise now but the first thing I thought of was HOLY S*&^ Fishface is ere!??!
Then another rock just missed the rods.. and another and another. I stood up and a “father” & son were quiet happily throwing stones at the rods (and missing thank ….), when I gave out “we go to the harbour son”, and I was just about to give up on the place after all, pin whiting after pin whiting, but I haven’t fished the cliffs right into the night since I was a kid, so I decided to stick to my guns. Still couldn’t get over the amount of rubbish that was there and it wasn’t just the F/Ns that did it either!!!.
And with so many tourists walking up and down, I can only imagine what they are thinking!
Anyways around 9:30pm packed up the last rod, and made my way to the Harbour, and seriously I thought the cliffs were bad?!?! The amount of plastic alone in the trawler side of the pier is sickening, yes they have made the pier an angling haven, BUT as I looked into the surrounding rocks the amount of empty tackle packs, old bait newspaper, mono, its just nasty.. Personally I think that will be my last trip to Howth, if I have any leftover bait I would rather eat it myself then go there!!!

Depressing stuff Creep. Seems that if you want to fish a litter-free rock mark it needs to involve a serious hike first to put off the louts. Fished Greystones pier/rocks on Friday night and the same story. Fishing away on the pier when a group of about 10 lads arrive, 2 rods between them and a ghetto blaster. 10 minutes later the place is covered in empty chip bags and I'm getting my head wrecked with low quality gangster rap. Maybe I'm just getting old but I was out of there in double-quick time. Think I'll leave the pier fishing until about November again!

Well Kev just like you told me yesterday on the phone how bad it was i knew the place would be dirty but not that bad and for fu*ks a dead dog that missed the water after it was thrown down. It really does give us a very bad name for Joe blogs looking on at us but at least my conscious is clear as i all ways check and clean my mark if there is any rubbish leftover... They so called amateur anglers who leave there mark like that should be ASHAMED of them self... just makes you think what there house is like....

Sickening to see marks abused in this way, good few marks down this direction that have been completely destroyed by a&$@£#es, and as sweetwrasse said the only way to find clean marks is to to hike a distance too them We have and i know others who have cleaned up these areas and you go back a week later and they are destroyed again Great report and good to get fish the night before

well done kev and co yous did better than me and dave on saturday we had a poor day arfer the drive to waterford should have went with yous and fair play for sticking it out on sunday i would have packed up and headed home

Yeah killiney was so slow it was near depressing! Only way it could have been worse would be if I had been suffering from toothache from hell...... Oh wait... I was Had I not been suffering I would have headed to greystones with you... As for the Howth 'landscape', well it's very clear not everyone believes in the 'leave no trace' code of conduct,

Its sad to see and will only get worse when the Macky bashers arrive in full swing But I thought of a way of solving the National debt... Have a litter lad stationed on the cliffs and have on the spot fines! National Debt solved!

If the council clean up the mess its only a short time later and its full of rubbish again. Then when you get down to rocks to fish you are greeted by all the waste left behind from those fishing for Mackerel, all the usual stuff cans, bottles, and the tons of wrappers from the feathers they use. It's only a matter of time before the council decide to fence off the entrance.

Couldnt have said it better myself!!!, what got me was the amount of tourist, while i was fishing, met an English gentleman, with two of his students studing out of all things Evironmental Science focused on the Marine Environement (recent studies showing a serious rise in Plastics found in Marine Animals stomaches not just in Ireland but worldwide).
Kept thinking to myself "Sh*&, here is Ireland, we have anglers with a GREAT understanding of various species of fish to be had, how to work the various lures and baits etc, and he has to come HERE and see this mess with his students, seriously what impression have they now gone home with?!?!?" (they were leaving for the airport after a brief trip to Howth, they had spent a week travelling coastal Ireland) I was talking to them briefly, and trying to explain that the majority of full time anglers DO NOT litter like this and the fact that with approaching Mackerel season you get a variety of hobby angler that is only seen on sunny days with beer cans etc, and other types of visitors. Didnt help when I looked at his feet there must have been 300 foot of mono near his shoe!!

every year we are discovering that the out of the way rock marks are no longer places for refuge, but magnets for the litterbugs with no respect for the sea and the marine enviroment

If there was a way to get through their thick skulls, that this is unexceptable.
I would love to see shops getting involved like a return fee for used empty (clean) baitboxes (say 50cent of next purchase of bait), companies making tackle putting "dispose in bin" markings on packets, anglers shun the litter anglers. Anglers that litter during competitions fined. Im sure you guys could even come up with better ones!

Just remember (a study done) that you shouldnt handle macks at all, due to the macks flesh reaction with the oils in our hands, this season Im wearing the gloves when i go macky bashin. Theres alot of studies done on this subject seemingly Ireland and England were leading the way . as for the ones holding the macks you can take the gloves off i thinks

I donty mind people using Joeys (for bait etc) I do myself but to take an extreme amount ?!? (last year seen two lads taken a small fish box full!, While myself and Sparkey were being more conservative taking only a specific size and amount, we set a limit on twenty which we got in half an hour, shook the rest off the hooks into the harbour untouched)

This thread kinda reminds me of a mass sermon...........in the 17th century............in Salem.
