Persons:-Me
[b1200 to 1800
Tide:-Low about 5pm
[b]Cold wet and windy
[b]Bait: mack and sandeel
[b]Rigs:-3 hook flappers
[b]Results:4 very small turbot.
Headed for a few hours out to Dunmoran Strand to see what was biting. Arrived at approx 12 and fished till one hour after low tide, 6pm. The weather was cold with an onshore wind which was to say the least cold, adding to this the fact that it was starting to rain, the warm car was looking the best bet! I squeezed into my floatation suit jacket and cursed that I had left the trousers behind. I'd travelled over 50 miles so I thought that I'd better give it a go. I fished with 2 rods the usual at short distance and the other way off into the distance (100 yards)
Within minutes I was getting small bites on the short distance rod with mack and soon after starting I landed my first ever turbot. Now it was no bigger that a beermat but nice to see. It followed that I landed three other fish, all very small turbot. I didn't bother with pics because when you laid them on the wet sand they were almost invisible!
I enjoyed my trip, but was wondering what this venue is like at high water? and is there bigger flatfish here?
A lovely place to fish even if I did have to lean at 45 degrees most of the time to stay on my feet.

I find the Turbot at Dunmoran and round about are always small - (under 25 cm, with most ive caught a lot smaller

) never seen a decent one taken. Like Zeke says it can be good for sea trout and flounder and doggies after dark - I always found it best from low tide up - the only fish i ever had around high water were mini coalies

also beware of weevers - theyre pretty common in that area.

Thanks for your comments lads, very much appreciated. I'll give it a go next week on the filling tide. I've walked this strand many times with my grandaughters in our bare feet (Summer), wont be doing that again, Weavers!!!!
