Melmore - 8th October

Mon Oct 10, 2005 9:26 am

Force 6 south south-westerly and some really heavy showers, including the odd hail based one, had me longing for early summer again. Fishing wasn't bad and we had congers to 6lb, pollock to 3lb, pouting, coalies and plenty of dogfish. Some very deep water here but expect to loose gear if you go out to the head. Never seen as many cormorants in my life, the place seemed to be full of them, one flew into my line and nearly took the rod with him.

Hiya Pete,

Many turn up for the meet? I couldnt make Donegal this weekend as other half has me banned from going anywhere outside a 20 mile radius from her as shes less than a month off from dropping our first sprog! Apologies also for last weekend too, made it as far as derry and ended up on the beer all day with a buddy of mine, how did that trip go?

Hi pete have a mobile home on melmore head did you follow the road right to then end over the top of the hill past the blown down lookout tower onto a small cove like feature. Fish here bout 20 times this year mostly spinning with ammo sandeel. Everthing you say about the place im talking about sound alike, had an 8ib pollack in july and many more smaller however the last week of august everything but the usual suspects (doggies) just vanishe. How far where you casting out into the sand i know its all snags from rocks to about 20 yards out. You should try the north side of the beach Tra na Rossan about a mile before melmore head

Sounds like the same place hairyconger. Reached the sand at about 110 yards, was patchy though and probably more shell than sand.

Yes Pete this does sound like the place if you go about half way down the point and stand up high this usually avoids all snags coming in , try the lighouse around the corner as well. Beware if fishing the lighthouse that you have to go on at low tide and come of at low tide (long hours) hope this helps for fishing this area in the future
