killiney Piranha...... 3/02/12

Sat Feb 04, 2012 2:49 am

Myself and one:

4 hr:

rise:

Artic:

Lug, sand eel:

any and all:

Piranha aka pin white.:

Had to get out so we decided on killiney because its close and its half decent now and then.

Headed to dig the lug and the collected the eel with all the hope in the world of catching something noce.....

Got to the beach and the weed was in really close, We could wade into it but after about 3 feet there was none so all was looking hopful.

We setup and got the line into the water but with in 5 mins the rods started to rattle. We knew straight away it was whites, so we tryed casting further, closer any where....... It was hopeless, millions of 2 inch whiting guzzles the bait every time. We lasted the 4 hours and decided to save what bait we had for a trip out on the 4th. Last catch was 2 whiting on 1 hook.

Might be the 3am silly's here on the night shift but I can't understand why there isn't tope/bass/cod/spurs etc as big as donkeys with all the whiting around to munch on. Maybe they only taste nice to us? They are in plague proportions, dogfish often take a hooked whiting so not exactly the fastest if dogs are feeding on them.

I have tried them live, flappered, halved , filleted as bait and other than once I had only dogs and slightly bigger whiting to show for it. The once I refer to was in Arklow about this time of year. I got bitten off by a bigger fish when whiting bashing on light gear, My dad who remembers the good old days said "thats spur dogs" . So I stepped up to my beach caster and 50lb snood 5/0 and whiting flapper hooked a good fish which bit me off after a short tussle. I had one old wire trace in the bag, sharpened the hook on a stone and on it went whiting flapper attached. Having only ever seen pictures of spurdog I was a bit sceptical and excited at the same time having briefly feelt a good fish that bit me off. Well after about 10 min I got my first spur about 8lb along with a good few more to about 12lb. We ended up halving the wire trace so we both could get spurs. Ended up with 16 fish between us and no whiting left for the tea. One of the best fishing sessions I've had on the east coast. Only for the smoothies It would be the best I hope to have something like this happen again one day, sadly it's still the only spurdogs I have ever caught.

Maybe thats why there is no pins down in Youghal or Monkstown! I've only seen foot long whiting in the reports from there.

Hi lads it would appear that the east coast must be stuffed every year with these pins, but you got to ask where do the bigger ones go to? If I encountered that many pin whiting I would be looking forward to some good fishing in the next couple of years, but you never seem to get the shoals of the more mature fish you should be from these vast shoals of pins. I am not privy to state of the Irish sea, save what I read, but it would seam to me that something really bad is happening to the fish there, as you cannot get some big whiting from the hoards if pins then they must be getting hovered up for fish meal to feed the bloody caged salmon, I can not for the life of me find any other explanation for their demise, they cannot be getting eaten by bigger fish as from what I understand there are not any of those to eat them. If any of you east coast anglers have any suggestions or explanation as to why these small whiting do not seem to be able to mature and give good fishing next year then I would be all ears to hear it.

There aint been any big fish around and thats why the pin's are in such big numbers. Whatever fish out there that eat these little fellows aint getting close to the shore. Which would suggest the trawlers really have took everyting close to the coastline. No predatory fish out there apart from dogs which means these whiting are rampant.

Cheers for the reply, I would agree with you about the lack of cod, haddock and pollack, to feed on the little whiting, however the little ones have got to grow and it is where they go to that interested me, I mean they got to get big if they are not getting hovered up for salmon feed, but I have yet to hear of any big fish being taken on the east coast. I find it inconceivable that all the small fish do not get to grow up to be caught at around 2lbs. Around 3/4 years ago now we had some great whiting at da wall in Cork, we had them up to 3 1/2 lbs, but since then there has been nothing other than pins, but then again we do have trawlers which trawl right up the narrow water and have the cheek to stop and haul in from of anglers fishing the place, there has not been a decent cod caught since they did it during a comp some weeks ago now. I think there can be little or no fish left in the Irish Sea and fear that it is only a matter of time before they have the entire coast cleaned out, but they will not be happy with that, they will want to fish for tiddlers saying that they have got to feed their kids, sod the rest of us.

fishin a couple of marks during late 2011 i notice one trawler with nets out very close to shore, then another mark I was fishin a pier and a boom trawler had its nets out all the way up to the harbor wall only on the last minute did he pull the nets in, then the boyos casted a shot net from the oppiste harbour wall which went around the otherside of the pier (pushed by the current) they did it in darkness and we could see their HI vis Jackets in the lamps workin away one was firing shots at the water with a gun!?!?! If this is what commercial fishing has got too!! next time I will try and video it ;)

the preservation of fish stocks is in everyones interest even the commercial boys, Im sure their sick of travelling great distance, blowing fuel, for feck all, but we all know theres greed involved with some
