Co. Down Rock Mark 07/01/12

People: Just me

Duration: 4 Hours

Tide: HW down

Weather: W/SW

Rigs: Spinning and Fly

Results: 2 Coalies, 2 Pollock

Part of my new years resolution this year is to put up more reports so best get started! Got a break in the weather today so headed to a spot i've been hiking to and exploring the past few weeks. Decided to pack the fly rod just incase the water clarity was up and it turned out good. Took a couple of coalies on sandeel imitation on the fast sinking - it's too deep for intermediates or floaters even on a dropping tide. Cracking sport on an 8 weight and quite chuffed that my first fish of the year is on the fly! Switched over to some soft plastics for sport with the pollock but only got the two in the end. One was deep hooked and about 2lb so its in the fridge! Not a brilliant session but not bad for a pleasant dander in Jan!

Is that just complete luck with the pollock or are they actually around this time of year aswel ? cause we went out lure fishing off the rocks and caught nothing, but there was a seal around and at one point he came up with what looked like a good size pollock in his mouth, but he was quite far away so it was hard to tell. One thing for sure do is that is was a fine sized fish ! Would they be more inclined to take baits opposed to lures at this time of year ?

Hi darol, I lost a fish off the same spot mark about two weeks previous and it was pushing 5lb so im inclined to say that it isnt luck. All i can say for certain is that they prefer slower lures in winter than in summer. I dont know if they are around in less numbers but at least there are some still about. The coalies still seem to be strong in the winter which should give some sport at least. The fishing does die when the seals are about, best to watch what way its working along the coast and go the other way! They do tend to come back on again once the seal moves on though.

they must still be some around so then, i thought all hope was lost as we didnt get one fish between us and normally that same spot is savage for pollock. Might give another bash someday so then, sound for the info man :)
