A Wicklow Harbour 1-1-2012

Sun Jan 01, 2012 3:40 pm

People:me

Duration:10-30pm-12-20am

Tide:low,

Weather:very windy

Bait:wraps, squid, mack

Rigs:2 hook flappers

Results:whiting, coalies, shore rockling, pollock, pouting

Report: With my gang all grown up now and doing their own thing on New Years Eve, it gave me the opportunity to head out and get the first fish of 2012 under my belt. I had some frozen bait in the freezer (where else would it be I suppose  ) so off I headed to Greystones Harbour. When I arrived at 10.30pm there were 2 guys just leaving, they had caught some "small fish, cods or whatever", so I wished them a Happy New Year and set up stall. I fished 2 rods, both with 2 hook flappers, size 2's, with various combos of wrapped lug, mack and squid. I was off the mark from the first cast with 2 small whiting on the distance rod, falling to mack/squid.

The wrapped/frozen lug was getting bites on the other rod in close but I wasnt hooking up, the hook was coming back upside down with the snood wrapped around it, a sign of it being spat out by the rockling. I eventually picked up a shore rockling  .

I had a few fish at this stage and just hoped it wouldnt dry up for the New Year, but bang on time and just as the fireworks were going off in the Harbour, I reeled in a nice little coalie, first fish of 2012, happy days  .

With the first fish of 2012 nailed, the plan had been to head home straight away, after all , who else but a sad loser would be on a pier on his todd while the rest of mankind celebrated  ,but the fish were biting andn I wasnt moving for another little while  . Next fish in was a pouting at distance, and I then put this rod in close while I started to pack up. I had lug wraps tipped off with mack on this rig. While packing the other rod, I noticed the other rodtip bouncing and lifted into it. I knew it was a half decent fish and I gingerly lifted him up the wall. I had put an extra long leader on(thanks for the idea Mitch  ) hoping that it would be a help in lifting fish up the wall, and as the leader knot slid through the tip ring and down towards the reel, I felt a bit more confident. I had changed my leader knots on the reels to an Albright knot and could definitely feel the benefit of the smaller knot. There was a bit of weight in this fish,a pollock, and although he measured only 34cms on the stick, he was very chunky and a nice addition on the night. I greedily had another cast and landed another coalie before merrily making my way back to the van. A good night and a good start to 2012, Happy New Year

Well done mate what a great pity it is that the whole of the Irish Sea has been raped and destroyed by over trawling. I never fished down that way but did the Antrim coast and I find it very hard to understand how the situation was ever allowed to get to the stage it is now at. I suppose that if they are given a few more years they will have everything cleaned out over this end too, I hope not and wish all you guys the very best for the future and hope that the fishing will improve, but it will not if the commercial hoards have their way, but we can live in hope and if we have not got that then we might as well pack it in now.

Regards Wez

Hope is the last thing that dies in man,,,,,as the saying goes  I try to think of Peace and Goodwill to all men and all that type of stuff at this time of year, not rape and destruction  ,,,,but I promise to think of that later

After reading the dodgers report here viewtopic.php?f=15&t=37700 I decided to hit the wall and beat him to the first report and the first catch from a poster of 2012.
Sadly I was beaten to the first catch and well done on being mad   enough to get out and you are now the title holder for 2012.
I’m now sure what trophy to present to you, for the “first catch of the year” of the “most fanatic angler of the year”. Either way the old fellows showed the boys how it’s done.

Happy hunting in 2012
