The wierd and wonderful Wexford adventure 20/12/11

Weather: beautiful little cold towards the latter half of the night

Bait: lug/razor/crab/mack/squid/

Rigs:flappers/pulleys/pennels/2down/

Results:fish yes fish lost count!!! Whiting, dabs, flounders, 5 breaded rockling...no codling




This trip started in the normal fashion, knowing we’re going south but where was the question. A visit to Ballymoney was on the cards sooner or later so we decided we try there first and weren’t disappointed, with the first cast in the water everyone caught something from our friendly whiting, to flounder and 5 bearded rockling and dabs. and to be honest that’s how the whole trip went without a single break, the four of us were kept busy baiting up rigs, hauling in fish, unhooking, setting free, putting the freshly baited traces out, rebaiting the traces that just come in..etc… WHO SAID THIS FISHING THING WAS RELAXING?!?! Tightlines decided to do a bit of showing off by catching two fish on the one hook TWICE!! (Personally I think he was just being scabby by putting really nice lug on the first hook :D) Then after a huge whiting plague and all four of us losing count of our fish we decided to move shop to a little known beach in Wexford (forgot the name of it but have it on my sat nav now!!)… and Tighlines decided he’d be my sat nav on the account of the last time I used the sat nav coming from Youghal we got badly lost in Waterford!! so with a little knowledge we set off on what could only be described as an adventure… taking a wrong turn we encountered a beach..with a 4x4 with its engine running ..didn’t seem to be anybody in it.. so we hopped out of the cars with our headlights on to look at the maps and discuss our plan of action, and every now and again stare at this mysterious 4x4 with the engine running wondering where is the owner… we decided the present beach we were at was a bit shallow and a quick call to the Dodger was in order who had us back on the road in no time flat.. (thanks Rodger!!) as we got back into the cars, the 4x4 sprung into life, its owner looking slightly bewildered at four lads with fluorescent jackets and headlamps on and shot off, with two cars in hot pursuit Thankfully we turned off at a junction to this other beach… and damn it looked great!! With that Chris87 and Tightlines out of the cars they shot off down to the shoreline, with Cannon and myself bringing up the rear… lines out it was noticeable that we weren’t as busy on this beach or so we thought… then whiting, flounders, dabs, 5 beared rockling were starting to come on shot after shot.. I decided to cast out three roads, one long range as far as I could get it, one at mid, and the bass spinning rod with a light trace and weight just in the surf, the bass rod shot off the tripod, landed in the sand and was being dragged towards the sea, a flounder had taken the light gear and was on the run!! then it was a 9inch rockling turn to try and drag the bass rod out, one thing I noticed on this new beach was how aggressive the fish were, it was like they haven’t feed for a week!! Took a 10inch 5 bread rockling off the hook and the little fella was trying to bite me even the whiting made good accounts of themselves! It was great to look at all the rods of all four of us out and see every single one of them with something tugging the lines!! That’s how it ended with the final fish being dragged in by me another 5 bearded rockling at distance this time, a great day/night plenty of fish, a few for the pan, and great craic!! I wonder if that 4x4 owner has gotten over his shock yet??

nice report sounds like a bit of crac was had and a load of fish too ,i dont think any codling will show up in numbers till the sea livens up a bit that westerly is doing us no favours at the moment!

Great day had,I tried to stay the distance but 1am came and the tiredness kicked in and a drunk wife kept calling who was home alone with her hot friend i thought i might get lucky but got home and they were both fast asleep so decided to head on and left the others on the beach.

Fair play Kev Alan and co.... some nice fishing done there and as you said on the phone Kev that the dinner was very nice.... Look forward to heading out in the new year providing my damn back heals up in time.. would of liked to head out on that session but injury is preventing me....
