Report: Had planned a trip down to Wicklow to see if we could catch some nice flounder before they disappear for the winter. After some meticulous planning we set out with every intention of landing a bumper catch. Sadly it was not to be and we ending horsing the entire crab population of Wicklow out of it. Surprisingly enough the best bait we found for the crabs was fresh and frozen peeler (a myth busted there). Determined not to go home without catching a fish a quick change of venue and a switch to some mack and lug got us into some whiting and Sweetwrasse got a nice rocking, fairly sure it was a three beard will upload a picture for confirmation. All in all a bit of a let down but some valuable lessons learned about catching crabs.

An article in this month's Sea Angler by Dave Lewis suggests that just after the first spell of frosty weather can be a good time to target flounder as the crabs will have headed off to deeper warmer water. Obviously it hasn't been cold enough yet in "Wickla".

I have found the flounder a bit tougher this year as well. Most of the esturies have a lot of fresh water in them and are very coloured after the changeable weather. We've had a few, but nothing like last year. It was much colder earlier last year as well, so there might be somethign to it alright....Crabs have been a menace.

Will have to try the spot again as I've heard good things about it. Maybe wait for a better tide.
