Impromtu session East Antrim beach

People:The wife and myself

Duration:4-7 east antrim beach.

Tide:1 up 2 down

Weather:calm and muggy(weird for November :? )

Bait:Rag,maddies,frozen crab and sandeel.

Rigs:3 hook flappers and millenium

Results:dogs,flats,very small coalie,pin whiting and a 51cm mackeral.

As the weather was so good, the wife suggested we headed to a small beach 5 mins from home for a couple of hours fishing before dinner. After she brought me round with smelling salts, the car was packed and we were fishing within 15 minutes. Conditions were ideal for an evening stroll but the sea was too calm for my liking (it was like casting into a swimming pool), never the less we give it a go.
We had plenty of lsd's and pin whiting at distance and we eventually found the flounder by fishing a 1oz lead, banging it out and retrieving bunches of maddies very slowly. This sort of made up for the lack of movement in the tide and as it got dark got us few small coalie as well.
Last chuck and as i was packing bits and pieces away, the rod at distance nearly pulled out of the stand followed by a big slack liner. Soon I had 51cm mackeral bouncing at my feet, nearly twice the size of the average mackeral we were getting in the boat this year during the summer when your supposed to catch mackeral!
Not complaining however, fresh bait for club match today.

jeese man, that's a pig of a mackerel :o . i find the same myself with the flat calm conditions. you gotta put a bit of movement into the baits to get interest from the fish. about 2 years ago when we were off on our travels we were in a wee tackle shop in a small town and they were selling 2 and 3oz ball leads. great for fishing clean beaches when there is little movement in the water. just gutted we've used them all now as they were also good for finding gullys where the fish lie about. but the extra movement considerably increases you catch rate :D
