Report:Didnt get out last week unfortunately as I was working over the Bank holiday weekend scaring kids and ruining their bonfires (say no more  ) so I was raring to go fishing. With Fishface holidaying in sunnier climes I decided to try the great tackle graveyard known as the North beach, Greystones  . Checking my diary for results this time last year didnt inspire me with confidence, but I was in one of those "You never know your luck" moods so I set off armed with lug and frozen peeler. It was a night for the survival suit and wooly hat as I set off down the lane, crossed the railway tracks (looking right and left  ) and down the ramp onto the beach, all the while dodging large lumps of unpickedup doggie doo  I turned towards the harbour at the bottom of the ramp and set up where I spied a couple of well respected anglers off this site last year fishing for cod  . The conditions were against me but I hoped this particular spot would produce the goods, especially as i'd spent the morning looking at pictures of cod uploaded on Facebook by certain individuals  I set up two rods, one with crab at distance and the other , a 2 hook flapper loaded with lug mid distance. The ground is foul here and it took me a while ,,,,,,,,,,,,,well 4 rigs actually  ,,,to get to grips with it. I was 20oz of lead lighter going back, lets put it that way  . I hooked into a couple of fish, but gave them the chance to dig in, thats how I think I lost the rigs. I put two new leaders on , one after the other at one stage  . After about 2 hours of losing rigs, I had a good tug on the crab rod, and lifted into it. This time I reeled in for all I was worth , not giving the fish a chance to dive, and I was rewarded with a nice fat coalie, blank saved(and I was starting to worry  ).

I then had 2 doggies , one after the other, also on crab. I changed the 2 hook flapper on the other rod to a single hook and also used crab on this , mid distance and I got a thumper of a bite, which turned out to be a fat codling, 35cms, happy days  .

I got another two fish, both shore rockling, one a decent 30cms and the other a tiddler. All in all it was not a bad night, a few half decent fish ensuring that I might return again to the tackle graveyard. I didnt get a bite on the lug, strangely enough :?

I left at 10pm and set off up the hill back to the van. Despite being lighter by at least 20oz of lead, 6 crab, 20 lug, I was still cream crackered by the time I arrived  On a positive note it has to be said that its easier negotiating the doggie doo's in the dark as they stand out more in the beam of a headlight.

That Gordy is never off the thing!

Dave ever try using the Breakaway Lead Lifts? I've had some luck using them before. At €2.50 for 2 if they save you a few snags they could be worth it.

When you come on to the north beach there you should go to your left towards Bray Head because to the right, as you found, must be the biggest ball of fisherman's rigs the world has ever seen. :D Fished a few comps there over the years and when you came down where the old archway was if you were drawn to the right you might as well have gone home and saved on the loss of traces and / or weights.

Cheers for the replies lads  ,i've made a few replacement rigs today  . I dont mind losing a few rigs if I can catch a few fish hiding in the snags  . I've got snagged in lots of different places on that beach over the years,,,,,,,,,,

That's a lovely rockling, never seen one with markings like that before. By the way did you spot the lead in between the stones in the picture of the coalfish? It might compensate the loss of 1 of yours!

I love the shore rocklings, think theyre a beautiful fish, and tricky as they snag you, I was lucky to get him, he snagged me up and I was going to pull for a break, but instead I gave him some line and then pulled from a different angle on the beach. I caught him unawares and kept reeling  . The lead in the piccie was my own  .
