I'd be surprised, but highly delighted, if there's any Bass around that way.

Could have been Tope, Spurdog or Smoothhound, but which one favours a squid bait??? Or a big Sea Trout..........

fisheo,

I take it you were fishing from the sides of the bay, off the rocks, rather than the beach itself? Which side were you fishing from and how far out the bay were you?

OLD TIMERS SAY THIS AREA WAS A HOTSPOT FOR BASS MANY YEARS AGO. AS FOR TOPE SPURDOG AND SMOOTHOUND I DOUBT IT, SEA TROUT ARE FISHED HARD ECSPECIALLY THIS TIME OF THE YEAR IN THE BAY HOWVER WOULD A SEATROUT TAKE A LUMP OF FROZEN SQUID?

As you are looking directly out to sea from the beach the rocks on the westeran side is the clean ground and the other side mixed. Pollack mackeral wrasse and conger are the main speices from the eastern sid3e and write out on the point on the eastern side is the area i fish.

I'd say without much doubt that the fast running fella you connected with was a tope. During the summer the charter boats from Culdaff to Port na Blagh all encounter tope while general fishing, seems to be good numbers up around that area.
