Ennariely sat 15th october

Tue Oct 18, 2011 7:10 pm

People:Me, mate from work and Jason a new guy on the site

Duration: 7-2am

Tide:low to high

Weather:lashing rain and cloudy, then clear and calm

Bait:crab,lug and rag

Rigs:pulley and 2 hook flappers

Results:whiting, flounder, dab, rockling and hounds

Report:Jason fom the site here had a post in the meets/buddies section during the week about him just getting back into fishing and was looking for someone to take him out. So I gave him a pm during the week with my number and told him to give me a text. After chatting to him during the week about getting out and his gear and all the rest, we arranged to get out sat nite for a session.

So sat nite came round and we decided to fish low to high tide at ennareily, me and Paul my mate from work drove down to meet Jason on the beach. We got there for 7ish and wer greeted by a chap whom we assumed was Jason, we wer correct and he was looking pretty angry. Quick introductions and a quick handshake while we wer going to the spot Jason had set up at. Soon as the introductions wer over we wer told that he had just snapped his brand new rod on his 2nd cast. We didn't believe him, then we got to his rods and there it was in half with a cast out to see. So he reeled it it and packed it up while me and Paul set up.

The fishing started real well with Paul pulling in a decent flounder on his second cast. Paul then followed it up with a double shot of whiting. Jason then pulled in a pin whiting, while my baits wer being taken but not catching a think. Then I hit a double of rockling followed by a double off whiting. Then the fishing died for a few hours, I decided I was just going to leave a crab bait out and hope there was a stray hound around as I had had 3 hounds the last time was out 2 weeks ago. About 11:30 my rod baited with crab got hammered,I lifted into a hound and within a second or two I had dropped it. Reeled in and rebaited as fast as I could as my heart was pounding. Cast out and within a minute my rod was bent double and I was into a decent hound, 15 seconds of having line stripped ended up with my line going slack. I new I had lost a good hound and I was fecking gutted, 2lost in 2 casts on the same rod. Got my line in to find my bait half eaten. Didn't bother changing it and cast straight back out. By this time I decided there wer hounds about so reeled in the second rod and baited up with crab. No sooner had I cast the second rod out the 1st rod was bent double and my line was shooting off the reel. I lifted into a decent hound and I wasn't losing it, after a good fight I landed a nice hound about 6-7lb . No sooner had I got that unhooked and took a few pics then rebated and cast out my other rod was bouncing in the tripod, was smiling like a 13 year old after popping his cherry. Picked up my rod and hooked into a nice hound, only to notice the rod which had just hit the water was going nuts to. Reeled in the one I had and it ended up being a hound about 3lb, couldn't get the hook out fast enough and the fish back in the water, wasn't goin to take pics of a 3lb hound when my other rod was bouncing in the tripod. Lifted my other rod to reel in another hound off about 2lb.

Was absolutely loving it, Paul and Jason wernt exactly as happy as me as there crab baits wernt getting touched. I was beaming, 5 casts 2 lost hounds and 3 landed. I was over the moon, we wer all fishing crab then waiting for the next round off hounds, only to realise at 2am they wernt coming back. We decided to have one last cast before we left and Jason pulled out a small dab to round off his not so great 1st nite back fishing. At least he didn't blank and at least he got to see his first ever hound. and it gave him a taste off what's to come next year with the hounds.

All in all apart from the 30 min spell with the hounds it was a pretty awful nites fishing. The beach looked perfect for bass for the 1st few hours, but no silver fellas showed.

Wer you in the group off 5-6 out in front off the car park? How did use get on? Was real bassy looking. Didn't see any tho and then it dropped right off and was like a lake. Was gutted cause when we arrived we wer thinking no hounds but maybe a bass. I was just lucky I got some late hounds. That's my last 2 trips there in 2 weeks I've been blessed with 3 hounds and my mate Paul ain't had one. I've been real lucky me thinks

We were right in front of the car park but there were only three of us and another guy fishing by himself to our right. Was really hopeful when I saw the surf but no luck on the bass front, tried fishing fairly close from 5-30m with rag, lug and fresh peeler. You did well to get those hounds, all I managed were 3 pin Whiting :( I suppose the break in the weather will mean the last of the hounds are gone for the year??

Yeah this year I have had 30+ hounds I'd say. I've had a great first year fishing in Ireland, I thought the 3 I got 2 weeks ago was def the last of them, I'd say the 3 this weekend is def my last for this year. Now to try find a bass or a Tope or a ray.

Yeah my luck was in, as up until them I had only 4 whiting to about 20cm and 2 rockling, really did think when I seen the surf that I would be gettin my 1st Irish bass. Always another nite for that tho. Let's hope it warms up again and the hounds don't migrate to where ever they go. There such a great fish to catch.

Tried kilcoole 3 weeks ago, using full fresh mackerel. With in 10 mins my bait was coming back as just a carcass, just a full set off bones not even skin left on the head. Hopefully if I go again there ain't so many crabs about.

Try a flounder fillet, I'm told its a much more selective bait for tope fishing
