Soft plastic lures, RedBay, Co Antrim, short session 8 Oct.

Sun Oct 09, 2011 9:12 am

People:Chuckaroo and me.

Duration:1.5 hrs, dusk.

Tide:filling, just after low water.

Weather:Wet and windy.

Bait:shads, sidewinders, metal spinners.

Results:Pollack, Coley, Codling.

Report:
Following Charlies success with the pollack on plastic lures a fortnight ago, we went for a quick throw in the evening to the same spot. I started off fishing metal spinner, Charlie fished plastics. Both of us were getting many small coley and pollack to begin with, some of the coleys close to a pound. Had a feeling if any decent pollack showed up Charlie would be more likely to get them on his plastics, than I would on the spinner. Sure enough as the light faded he got a nice 2.5lb pollack and 2 casts later a fish of 2lb.

I stuck on a weighted shad and got a hit on second throw, fish got stuck in weed but after a bit of giving it slack and pulling at it it came free, nice wee codling of 1lb 12oz. I doubt if that fish would have been taken had I kept fishing the metal spinners, plastics (and fly rod too on other occasions) seem to be more productive than the metal sprat type spinners a lot of the time. Could well be something to do with being able to fish them slower, particularly where the water is shallow. Spinners great on their day but maybe not always the best thing to be throwing?

The 2 fish pictured were kept for eating, couple of dozen returned but mostly small.

wow, well done 8) after reading your report I'm itching to go out, and, having the inlaws here for another week makes it all the easier to cope with less than desirable weather conditions :)

Nice session lads 8) I used to use soft plastic lures all the time at the marks I fish but have found over the years that the lead spinners have outfished them everytime  good thing about the lead ones is you can put a nice bend into the them giving them a better action in the water but Im gona try the soft ones again on Thursday when im out spinning to see if how they fish!!!!

Aye Sparkey the wee codling was good, just baked it on the bone with a bit of butter, gave the pollack to an old neighbour, I eat them the odd time, usually battered in deep fat, but my neighbour is always so grateful for a fish I try to get him one when I can. He's 73 and cant fish himself anymore, not very mobile. Charlie kept that pollack to give to him.

Cheers.

I've been out a few times mate, but not great with the weather and a lot of family stuff going on. Had a bad night in Glenarm last week with 5 species, but all small and long periods of inactivity (was an odd night weather and tide wise plus no moon). Locally i've been doing well for good sized Flounder, which i'm specifically targetting right now, and still plenty of big Pollack around. I fancy a wee fun session next with the lighter beach gear for Whiting, Codling, Pouting hopefully.
