Report:After a disastrous (only in the fishing department

) trip to Donegal last week which co-incided with the arrival of Hurricane Katia, , I needed to wet a line. With a promise of some frozen crab from Neil, I headed to South Wicklow to hopefuly get in some Smoothies before the season ended. When I arrived Mitch and Mick were set up and conditions were perfect for Smoothies. Mick was first in with a double of flounder and once I got set up I was also hitting doubles of flounder and Dabs most casts. I got these on rag, tipped with squid or mack. I like to strike early on flatties , so as theyre not hooked deeply. On one cast I got a double of a flounder and a weever. The weever was easy enough to unhook with a towel over him , once youre careful of his poisonous spine

. I've seen guys stamping on them once theyre unhooked but thats not my cup of tea

. Fishface arrived and gave me the crab, thanks Neil

, and I started to hunt smoothies in earnest. No luck in the Smoothie Department for me unfortunately, but Mitch got 2, one was a cracker

.There was a rumour going around that Neil had caught two, but without photographic evidence i'm not convinced, especially as he's not shy when it comes to showing off his catch

. The doggies came on the feed as the tide turned and the lads started to pack up. I stayed a bit longer with some juicy crab , rag and lug donated to the cause by the very generous Mitch, but I just got more doggies. I left at 11pm and was met by 2 guys shining torches in my direction

,,,,,,at first I thought they were Anglers but I got a bit nervous when I didnt see any rods

. Thankfully it was the Fisheries guys who took pity on me and carried my gear back to the van once I had completed a short survey about fishing and how much I spend on it. If my wife ever gets wind of my answers i'm in deep you know what

. p.s. I was also stopped by the Gardai at a checkpoint on the way home .I used up the last of Mitchs bait in Greystones tonight in a busy enough session with lots of whiting, blennies, sea scorpions and my first mack of the year
