A Wicklow Beach 22-9-11

Fri Sep 23, 2011 11:22 pm

People:me, Mitch, Mick, Neil

Duration:6pm-11pm

Tide:rising

Weather:nice, dry, calm seas

Bait:crab, rag, squid

Rigs:pulleys for Smoothies, 2 hook flappers for other species

Results:Flounder, Dabs, Smoothound, Doggies, Weeverfish

Report:After a disastrous (only in the fishing department  ) trip to Donegal last week which co-incided with the arrival of Hurricane Katia, , I needed to wet a line. With a promise of some frozen crab from Neil, I headed to South Wicklow to hopefuly get in some Smoothies before the season ended. When I arrived Mitch and Mick were set up and conditions were perfect for Smoothies. Mick was first in with a double of flounder and once I got set up I was also hitting doubles of flounder and Dabs most casts. I got these on rag, tipped with squid or mack. I like to strike early on flatties , so as theyre not hooked deeply. On one cast I got a double of a flounder and a weever. The weever was easy enough to unhook with a towel over him , once youre careful of his poisonous spine  . I've seen guys stamping on them once theyre unhooked but thats not my cup of tea  . Fishface arrived and gave me the crab, thanks Neil  , and I started to hunt smoothies in earnest. No luck in the Smoothie Department for me unfortunately, but Mitch got 2, one was a cracker  .There was a rumour going around that Neil had caught two, but without photographic evidence i'm not convinced, especially as he's not shy when it comes to showing off his catch  . The doggies came on the feed as the tide turned and the lads started to pack up. I stayed a bit longer with some juicy crab , rag and lug donated to the cause by the very generous Mitch, but I just got more doggies. I left at 11pm and was met by 2 guys shining torches in my direction  ,,,,,,at first I thought they were Anglers but I got a bit nervous when I didnt see any rods :? . Thankfully it was the Fisheries guys who took pity on me and carried my gear back to the van once I had completed a short survey about fishing and how much I spend on it. If my wife ever gets wind of my answers i'm in deep you know what . p.s. I was also stopped by the Gardai at a checkpoint on the way home .I used up the last of Mitchs bait in Greystones tonight in a busy enough session with lots of whiting, blennies, sea scorpions and my first mack of the year

Excellent report!!!!! Love the photos, never get bored of seeing photos of smoothies!! (The Stary smoothie is beautiful!!) a question though was that the great weever?? (i know we have two spieces one is the lesser, smaller fella and slightly flatter, seemingly they like me  ) (well done for not killin him, i know they are a pain but live an let live unless ya gonna eat him). An Fishface is touchy aint he  . suprised the Fisherys lads were out that late conducting surveys  whats next mobile phone companies ringin us 3am, "Sorry sir for disturbing you from your sleep BUT would you like to ..."
