Paul,

Probably Scad or Horse Mackerel- see Species Guide on this site.

Hi Paul

If it tasted like mackerel, and had a series of small fins on the lateral line near the tail (very small) it was a scad or horse mackerel.

If it was silvery it could have been a shad, very different and quite rare.
Two species, most common is the twaite shad caught mostly as they run the rivers along the south coast. Far rarer is the allis shad.

My money would be on a scad as they often swim with mackerel shoals...

FWIW

Scad they where

Thanks for you help, having looked at the species guide they where scad.
I caught them on a flooding tide in the deeper water toward the middle of the bridge, on small bits of mackerel.
