Dalkey Mark

Mon Aug 29, 2011 3:09 pm

People: Me and a few friends

Duration: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Tide: 12:30 was high

Weather: Overcast

Bait: Lug

Rigs: One hook, feathers

Results: Few pollack and few wrasse.

Report: Was hoping on getting out fishing from Bulloch on the boats as I start back to school tomorrow. A few of my mates and I had planned getting out on the boat as tides were favorable and conditions were ideal. So yesterday I spent two hours breaking my back getting lug and ended up with about 80 and unlimited mussel. Despite it being quite calm we weren't aloud out so hatched a plan for a rock mark in Dalkey. First up my mate caught a small ballan wrasse, and I caught a nice corkwing, both falling to lug. The session continued in this manner for a while; nothing spectacular, but nice easy fishing nonetheless. Then my mate hooked 3 big juicy lug onto his hook and left it for a while. He has only done a bit of fishing before so was using a big beach pier rod. He left the rod for a while and then came back to find his rod tip bouncing. Got a good fight even on the heavy rod and ended up with a ballan of about 3 and a half pounds - 4 pounds. He was delighted as this is a very big fish for Dublin from the shore. Was a new moon today so I couldn't help feel Cortaz' predictions are spot on. Anyway fish released and we were back for more. My other mates were getting a few wrasse and small pollack in between the odd big fish. My mate got a nice ballan of about 1 and a half pounds, and I followed up with a similar fish on my new penn powerstix pro bass rod. Brilliant to use! Really light so you get a good fight but strong enough for bigger fish. There were no more fish to be had as the tide turned, but a good auld session all the same! I didn't bring a camera so sorry for the lack of photos!

well done! :D Really want to catch a wrasse! I heard they put up a good fight! I fished out in Dalkey before but havent got a wrasse yet! How far out wer you's casting for the wrasse? I heard the wrasse like to stay around the kelp so I was trying not to overcast as the kelp beds are quite close to the shore. Last time I was using a float rig with some rag, I must try lug!

Thanks lads! Yeah your probably right! The wrasse are right at you feet if the mark is anyway deep. You should pick up loads of small ones on the east pier. You'll get the bigger ones around dalkey! Just explore the different rocks. It took me a summer to suss out the marks but now I've a few decent ones!
