People:
Myself, Fitzer Snr. & Fitzer Jnr.
Duration:
7pm - 11pm
Tide:
High 6:40 pm
Weather:
Calm & Humid
Bait:
Fresh Lug & peeler
Rigs:
Pulley Pennels & 2 hook flappers
Results:
I had 4 plump codling on lug & crab cocktails while young fitz had a nice codling on lug close in, big fitz had 2 coalies and 2 tiny codling on lug.
Report:
Strangely the best fishing was during daylight, had 3 codling, all over 2lbs on my first three casts, I thought we were in for a belter of a session but just before it got dark the fishing slowed and i only had 1 further fish again about 2 lbs. No blanks which is always important!
Looks like the fish were hard on the feed for the first hour and a half of the ebb then the bites tailed off a bit. Plenty of crab activity and no doggies thank god!

were they red cod Alby? fishing in daylight is often better for these fellas! they also like calm 'clear' seas too!

How ya mark,
They were all 'fresh' fish, the lovely green & olive colour, young fitz had a red one alright close in, i think the ground might be a bit rougher where he was fishing which might explain it.
Plenty of the red fellas in the kelp at the 40 ft in sandcove, crab at about 50 yards does the trick, just try not to skull one of the eccentric oul lads swimmimng in the nip, great wrasse to be caught there too.

are they biggies though at the 40foot?! the rough ground south of dun laoighaire holds a few fish alright.
surprised the fish were 'fresh', but they did show sept. last year.
i think u've given me the cod itch back....i was makin pulleys only a few days ago. loadsa crab in the shed too! why am i not fishin now??

I've never had any really good ones in sandycove, biggest about 2.5lbs, the only thing about here is NOBODY fishes it during winter (even i like to go to Wicklow from september on) and rarely fishes it after dark, it's got deep water and rough ground right under your feet, I'm even convincing myself to give it a go.
Still for guaranteed codling, the North Beach 2-3 days after a good easterly takes some beating!

i agree Alby. it's on my fish-list this winter. it's perfect. some good fish are always taken by the lads fishin in the boats. they are there i am convinced of it. i'll give u a shout Mac!

good coddling can be caught from now onwards at bullock harbour rocks, fishing into the rough stuff at the back, use pulley rotten bottom rigs cast about 60 yards and they will take most baits with crab and squid the best. caught 41/2lber here this time last year. and you'll also get really good sized wrasse as a bonus...happy hunting. Agree about the north beach after easterly's.

wait for it.....a 4lb thornback, 14lb conger, 3 bull huss one was 5lb ad 3 plump coddling...this was two weeks ago... i didn't believe him till he showed me the photo's....so there is really along this part of the coast.

What's a cod?? I think I've forgotten. The fishing here in the South of France really sucks!! I think the fish have all gone to Ireland!!!

the 'big' cod took dead mouldy rag! others caught on plain ragworm. even though they have crabs in their bellies they seem keen enough on the rag. happy to feed in the bright sunshine aswell.
loadsa mackeral and coalies attacking small fry today around greystones harbour. perfect for plaice too. seanibo had a codling and a plaice and i had a disaster session due to technical difficulties!!?? enjoyable all the same. watchin the coalies attack the feathers on the top of the water was great crack! only a short session, wish i had of spent the day and done it right! heres to a good cod season!!!
