A West Clare beach

Fri Jul 29, 2011 1:15 am

People:Myself and Charles

Duration:2.30pm - 9pm

Tide:high at 4.30pm

Weather:nice day

Bait:peeler crab, razor, ragworm and mac

Rigs:various

Results:1 flounder, undersized and 1 dog on the 1st cast, 2 mac (on ragworm??), 1 plaice (undersized) and 1 flounder (28cms)

Report:Tried to upload a photo of the flounder but it seems my pic is too large. I happened to have fresh peeler crab and thought a bass might be on the menu. According to the guy in Fanore post office, an odd one has been taken....but he probably tells that to everyone-)). Despite a favourable surf and the presence of feeding terns, all we had for our efforts were a double of undersized flounder/doggie (rag & crab), 1 flounder (rag tipped with razor) and 1 undersized plaice (rag). Conditions looked good for plugging as the water was surprisingly clear but neither of us had the right gear with us. All in all a hard but enjoyable day in search of the elusive west coast bass!!!

In Fanore, the top of the smaller beach at the north end of Fanore has bass, but spinning with a kilty or a purple flying C from the rocks is the way i seen them caught there.

Try fishing it a couple of hours each side of low water next time. Lug or sandeel works best. There are a few double figure bass come off there every year but to be honest I have given up on the place.
