Sun Jul 10, 2011 11:36 pm

People: Myself and Arthur

Duration: 10.15am - 9pm

Tide: up, down then up again

weather: cloudy with sunny spells couple of light showers but on the whole dry

Bait: rag / mack / sandeel

Rigs: various

Results: mackerel / pollack / wrasse

Report:

Hit the road just after 6am for a days fishing at Teelin. After a quick pit stop in Kesh and a further stop on the mountain road between Pettigo ad Laghy for breakfast, we arrived at Teelin Pier around 10am. Our aim was to fish the low rocks and target anything about using a variety of methods and rigs.

Two guys were already fishing when we arrived at our chosen spot and informed us that mackerel were about. They left shortly after leaving us to get on with it. Must say the going was a lot tougher than I expected for this mark with the first mackerel being caught nearly two hours into our session and nothing else biting on the bottom rigs.

After lunch I changed to the float and had a number of wrasse (nothing spectacular) before they too decided to go off the feed. Another group of lads appeared mid afternoon and started spinning for macks. Again, things were slow but they did manage some success.

With one rod nailing a bait to the floor in the hope of a conger we both resumed fishing for the macks and in between bait and rig changes this kept us going until 9am.

In the end our grand total for nearly twelve hours fishing was ten macks, four wrasse and two pollock. Overall, I was a bit disappointed especially when you consider that it was a 300 mile round trip with 6 hrs driving but hey, what else would I have been doing!!!

Don't feel too bad about it Stevie, I was across the bay from you at St Johns Point and drew a complete blank.

I have found fishing in Donegal bay this Summer to be not very productive - compared with the last few years. Small numbers of mack and pollack. Have others of you a view on this?
Alan.

You're right Al but just like you and the wee man, you always live in hope of what could happen next time. However, should have said that my mate Art is a relative newcomer to sea angling having been a trout man for many a year but the highlight of the day was watching him tackle three macks on the one trace - boy did he enjoy that :D

Must admit Stox felt a bit better when I read your comments 'cause I had St John's in mind when I was heading that way. Glad that I gave it a miss mate. :|

Thanks for the comments lads and in keeping with what this site is meant to be all about, at least you know how what to expect at Teelin at the mo.

All the best and keep posting.

well done stevie, me and doggey dave stayed in ballintra the first week in may [with wives etc], did mainly trout fishing as a river was at the bottom of the garden of the cottage we hired. So we stayed near leghy that you mentioned in your post. There was a salmon leap pub near there and it was on the shore beside a pier with..... wait for it ... grass on it, yep i mean grass that somebody mowed!!. We fished it for about 2 hours and a guy came out of the pub after his meal etc and told us youd catch f*** all there except the odd mackrill later in the year if your jammy. He was a local boatman/fisherman so we took on board what he told us and promptly dissappeared. We should have known better, fishing a pier with a lawn on it lol.Wish we had tried teelin rocks as it must have been somewhere nearby.

PS I i was brought up and lived in dundonald for over 30 years.
