Wed Jun 22, 2011 9:08 am

People: Bingham and I

Duration: 7pm - 11pm approx.

Tide: Dropping to low

Weather: Rain, then clear

Bait: Rag, Peeler, Fresh Mackeral

Rigs: Various Flappers, DDPS, Conger

Results:

Corkwing, GS Wrasse, Ballan, Coalfish, Codling, Silver Eel, Conger Eel

Report:

Back down to the harbour that Sheppy and I had given a go about a week ago, this time we were fishing it over the low so I didn't really know what to expect. Wrasse rod immediately started picking up a nice variety but the lack of water seemed to allow a lot more Goldsinneys to attack the bait before the bigger wrasse could move in and take it. Usual mix of Wrasse, Coalies and Codling from a bit further out all taking rag, and rag/mack combos.
First drop with the conger rod was about an hour later for me, dropped in beside Bingham and about half an hour later turned to see his Rod going skitzo! Hold on! My Rod was going Skitzo too! I lifted into the Fish, which had obviously nosed past Binghams gear first and immediately it hit the surface (gotta love Eeling in 3ft of water!!) Took it round to a set of steps where Bingham did the honours, Photos, Weighed at 9lb then released... What a start! Happy days.
That wasn't the end of my eel action for the night though!! Was fishing Bigger fish baits out a bit further in the hope of maybe a dogfish or two or a Codling Similar to the one I lost last time! Didn't happen that way, but did manage my first ever shore caught silver eel! RESULT! Species number 27 for the year! Woowhoo!
As the tide approached low it slackened off, with Bingham and I only picking up the odd fish before it was time to head home...
Another great night...
Will have pics when Bingham sends them to me! lol

good session drew nothing like a big slimmey conger ,was looking at a program on telly fishing for eels they grabbed the eel by the head to cover its eyes and ran a finger down its lateral line from gill to tail took their hand off and the eel just lay their like it was dead  as soon as they placed them back in the water they went off like a shot

Real nice fishing in low water and great conger, just don't tell 'conger man'. haven't caught an eel for years, except in freshwater. When I was a kid I used to get stacks in The White Harbour about 25-30yrs ago whenever the mouth was closed off a bit and and it was semi freshwater. I used to take a bagful home and grill the fillets with butter, salt and pepper. Quite tasty although they did resemble bicycle inner tubes.
Used to get them at Ballycarry Bridge back in the days of fantastic flounder fishing there and a friend of mines' neighbour used to target them in the pool on the other side of motorway near Hazelbank. Not sure if many still there , but i did see a crowd of guys fishing there a few times and they didn't look like half-wits.

You'd be quite wrong, since I passed the test/Bingham drives we've expanded our horizons somewhat... :P North Down does have a few hidden gems though, just need to keep them from prying eyes incase of mass macky basher/eastern european friends invasion! 8)
