Greystones 11-6-11

Sun Jun 12, 2011 12:40 pm

People:me

Duration:6pm-11pm

Tide:high 8-30pm approx

Weather:southerly breeze to start,,,,calm and mild later

Bait:rag, squid crab

Rigs:flappers, pulleys , single hook mini rig

Results:2 x short spined sea scorpions, 3 x pollock, 1 x wrasse , 1 x flounder, 1 x whiting

Report:
Left the house heading for Ennereilly, but on the way I decided to drop by Greystones to have a gander  . Driving through the Harbour I saw the new tackle shop ,Gotcha's, and made a note to drop in next time  . The rocks where I normally fish were deserted and looked so inviting that I hadnt the heart to pass them  ,it would have been rude really and as I had been in work early and was tired etc etc ,I convinced myself that i'd have a great night here pulling in wrasse and big pollock  . Easily convinced, I got set up , 2 rods, one at distance and the other in close scouring the rocks and gullies for unsuspecting fish. There was a stiff breeze and I had to don the monkey hat to keep my bonce warm  . A french angler greeted me in English (in a french accent  ) and he set up a float rig. I caught a 6 inch scorpion fish and had to stop myself from calling him to show it off,,i'm a sad case  . He didnt see it even though I threw it back near him  . He stayed for a couple of hours but didnt have any luck unfortunately  . He left, just like I've seen so many others do in the past, just as the sun set, just when you start to get bites  . In fact , just as he drove off , I got a decent tug on my small rod and landed a corkwing wrasse, my first this year from Greystones  . The next hour was the most productive, with a whiting and a flounder on the distance rod, and another sea scorpion and 3 pollock on the small rod in close. The pollock were caught one after the other , as soon as the bait, rag tipped with squid, hit the water. I hoped for a decent pollock, as i've got some larger ones at dusk here before, but it wasnt to be. 2 lads set up as it was getting dark , and as they were in between me and the place from whence the furry friends magically appear from, I decided to stay on another while  . It was so bright that I couldnt believe it when I checked the time on the phone and it was 11pm  . I packed up and made short work of the 30 yd trek back up to the car and thanked myself for not going to Omaha beach, or Iwo Jima, or any of the other Wicklow beaches, who wants to catch pups when you can catch minis here

p.s. When my rod tips werent twitching I was thinking about :

1. Ennereilly and what was going on there :?
2. the price of petrol
3. How much I spent on the bait.
4. Whether or not I would open a can of beer when I got home

but mostly what a great , peaceful, friendly, relaxing sport fishing is

p.p.s. Apologies to the old guy who came down for a chat that was going on about the Economy, and the Government , and the Banks and Pensions etc etc for telling him that I came here to get away from all that and that he was depressing me   and also apologies for the sorry tea towels,i'm really going to make an effort in future, they look crap in the photos

I know what you mean Roger, theres always people coming down for a chat there and you feel guilty with all the rubbish around and feel the need to explain that its not your rubbish  . I was the kid in the class that went red even though I wasnt guilty of anything   . I always bring my own rubbish home , heres a pic to prove it complete with manky teatowel ( I 'm going red as we speak/type :? ). Pity about all the rubbish , I did notice it last night and its all angling related
