took a couple of sea trout, some macks and something very big & strong from malahide estuary before work. Took them on an olive over white clouser. Then got a fish on which broke off after about 2 mins, it took me into my backing and it was tough to get any line back, then broke off before I could get a look at it. Anyone any idea what this was, if it was bass it was very big, but it didn’t feel like a bass. Ideas?

i was working up and down the estuary from the car park as far up as the tide would allow.
could have been a foul hooked fish, that would account for the odd feel it gace, but the weight of this & the fight it put on. i thought of mullet, but they would rarely if ever take a fly. (would they)
i doubt a conger would be hanging around that estuary.
was back out there this evening, no luck at all, not even a few mackerel!

Hi
Mullet will often take flys, my dad had a specimen mullet on a fly just two weeks ago in kerry. (see my dingle report from aug 20 below) and had a good few from island bridge years ago when salmon and trout fishing

Was fishing Erne estuary a few years back and a mate foul hooked a mullet in the dorsal fin, it was about 5lbs but took 100 yards of backing off the reel as he couldn't turn its head, took about 20 mins to get it in. Maybe the same happened here?

my bet is it was a big sea trout the river broadmeadow at the back of the estuary used to get a run of huge sea trout, but not anymore since the river is now like a canal after the council used it for drainage schemes,
some sea trout still run the river ward beside the estaury so it could be a big lone stragler.

Hi keozer!
Used to live near Malahide and going home this weekend, might give it a go. Never caught a bass but have had plenty of saltwater sea trout. Just wondering, what state of tide is best here? How far out are the fish usually, and did you use an intermediate/sinktip/what?
Must dig out my old collection of saltwater flies - the old gadget might get tied tonight....
