Killiney 29/5/11

Just myself. 3.30- 4.45

Low tide mark, low tide was 3 got there bout 3.30 really you want to be there as tide is going out as it rushes in pretty quick on you.

Was only interested in decent wrasse so used a size 2 hook on a one snood heavy traces 30lb mono.
Used whole limpet at a time cut in half to avoid the mini nibblers

Fished about an hour, got 2 nice ballan wrasse, mission accomplished. Few other hits, great fight from both wrasse, like pulling up a breeze block

Rag woud be ideal but limpet was all I needed, tried berkley gulp peeler, not a bite.
Good session as planned but footing went pretty quickly so moved on, tried rocks at Bulloch for a while, bout an hour, 2 hook flapper and float. No bites.

Great wrasse mark will be back with rag and 2 hours before lowtide.

Weather was grand, heavy swells at times, always keep your eyes open when you're close to sea level.

Nice to see the wrasse appearing Cormac.

Fished that spot quite a bit the last few years and had thousands of small wrasse and pollock with a few 3 to 4 lbers.

Never found the tide to make much difference myself though and I'd usually fish a float rig with rag - works best for me anyway.

Must give the lures a better go there this summer.

Great spot to fish early morning with the sun coming up :)

Great catch! I have recently moved to killiney and I have just picked up fishing. I was out on Sunday for 2hrs. I was using a 2 hook flapper with some rag and mack but didnt seem to get any bites. Are there any certain spots on the beach that are good for catching wrasse or bass?

The only reason I prefer it at low tide is because there's more room to stand and hop around! At low tide you can see the breaks in the kelp. It's good on the float too but take your eyes off the float for a second and the wrasse will have your float down into the kelp and its gone!

Rag is ideal that's for sure, but limpet, limpet everywhere!

I wan't to go back and weasel out a whopper I know they're in there

I'm usually more of a cast and relax angler, because I get very little bites!

But sometimes, you can know a mark, target a specific species, what size even, know what baits and rigs you need and go in and get on them straight away.

Read some of the reports from the serious bass guys! Guys who have up to ten bass a session in no time!

Sometimes when I go for flats in Wexford, all I'll have is flattie rigs, the right bait and right conditions and I clean up. Some (most) nights I just want to go out and cast a scratch about!

Thats what real angling is, it's not luck, know your mark, your species, your rigs and bait!

But the most important thing is get out there get fishing and you learn something new everytime!

When I was a beginner and I still am and I wanted a "boost" or whatever you want to call it. The first species I knew I could almost guarantee myself a few fish was doggies, their habits were easy to learn and I would just go out doggie bashing!

I'm not implying you're a beginer chenz! ;) just saying to everyone

I've only realised that myself recently!

rag pulls more fish but without a doubt legered crab for the big ones around there

Never fished crab there but must try ledgered peeler and hardbacks with some heavier gear fished into the rough stuff.

Usually float fish a yard or 2 out, or covering the large kelps beds slightly to the left - had my biggest wrasse in that spot at a fat 42cm (didnt have my scales with me so unsure what he weighed), like fishing the floated rag as the pollock can keep you entertained and the 2lb + fish are so much more fun on light tackle :D

Not unsual to get 35+ fish in 3 or 4 hours.

It's good on the float too but take your eyes off the float for a second and the wrasse will have your float down into the kelp and its gone!

Too true, but it keeps you on your toes, rarely lost a float though in my 20+ sessions there over the last few years

Do you fish to the left or right side of the steps down?

The little pool down there is a great spot to target the mini species with size 8 or 10 hooks and 1cm pieces of rag, all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff in there, even seen a 12" mullet in there one day, couldnt catch him though :(

To the left, less naked swimmers! There's a deep hollow where people used to dive in there too that holds a few fish, I'll head down with you soon Mark, dressed! ;)
