LEENAN PIER 27th MAY

Sat May 28, 2011 3:58 pm

People:me, brother, uncle

Duration:11am-4pm

Tide:high

Weather:stong south western wind and rain

Bait:sandeel and tip of mackerel

Rigs:2/0 aberdeen pulleys

Results:(disapointing) 1 dogfish

Report:
We headed to lough swilly to try and catch r first ray, i had a few marks in mind so we headed to leenan pier first, we arrived and the weather wasnt to bad. it was abit overcast and the wind was calm. we got set up and my bro and uncle cast out first, they were in the left handside so all i had was to the right, my bro said watch when ur casting u dont hit the lamp post to the right, so i said ill be fine, so i got ready to cast and thumped it out and heard this almight bang, i had hit the lamp post full on     my lead had some damage thats why it opened my eyes why its a must to use shockleader, cause if it had of hit someone in the head, will u just have to see the lead to think wat damage it would do to some1s skull.(pic below) anyway we had some laugh at me hitting the lamp post and i got some stick the rest of the session. as soon as we got the bait in the water the wind picked up and the rain started. it made fishing basically impossable with r tripods and rods been blown over but we got shelter in the car, we stayed for a good while but u couldnt even tell if u were getting bites with the wind. so we deciced to call it a day. we all reeled in and i had a dogfish on my rod, so it wasnt a wasted trip. i dont think conditions were favourable for catching a ray but i will get back when the weather gets better to have another go at catching my first ray.

Unlucky with the ray, but let your incident with the lead cracking off be a reminder to others, always use shock leader, better safe than sorry

At least you didn't blank and I'm sure you'll get your ray another time. Try tipping the sandeel with squid instead of mack, seems not to attract the doggies so much but works better on ray I found. It would help also if you wrap the squid around the sandeel and secure it with bait elastic. This keeps the bait safe a bit longer instead of it being teared apart from crab or smaller nuisance fish prematurely.
Better luck next time!

hard luck on the ray front, but at least the doggie saved the blank.
you should have better luck with the ramonds when conditions improve.

go to the "white lady" on the errislannin peninsula about half an hour from leenan. fish at low tide only to the right of the lady, use lug combined with sandeel(minus tail and head) ,cast 30 ta 40 yards into the sandy channels and your pretty much sure of some big thornback.
