Swilly Safari, Co Donegal, 11/05/11

Thu May 12, 2011 10:00 pm

People: Bingham and Drew

Duration: Beach 9am-10.30am, Pier 11.30am-4pm, Beach 5pm-8pm

Tide: Push, High, Drop

Weather: Showers, High Winds, Interspersed with sunny spells.

Bait: Mackeral, Squid, Sandeel, Ragworm

Rigs: Loops, Flapper, DDP

Results:

Bingham - 7 Rays to 6.5lb, 2 Dogs to 2lb6oz, 1 Plaice 37cm, 1 Turbot
Drew - 1 Small Ray, 1 Dogfish

Report:
6am start and Bingham picked me up, we were both buzzing as we headed up the road to Londonderry, hopeful of a good day on the rays, here's how it went.

Mark 1
On our way up to the first intended Mark, we noted that the tide still seemed right for one of the beach marks, so ended up trying there for an hour, Bingham managed a Doggie here, I blanked, but it was still good to get the gear into Donegal waters!

Mark 2
This is where the fun started, well, the fun really started when we got lost in Buncrana, but that's a story for another day... Got to the second venue to find the wind giving it full rice into our faces. Caution was thrown to the wind though, and we soon got set up. Bingham had a ray pretty much straight away, the bite, savage and unmistakable the look on his face when it was landed? Like a kid at Christmas... "Chirstmas" came at least another 6 times on this Venue with a couple of lovely rays, including his 6.5lb fish, which really tore off 8) , also a lovely Plaice fell to rag on a penell tipped with Mackeral. As for me? Well after Binghams first Ray and Dog I got a bite, prayed for a ray but hauled in a little dogfish, Sh*t. I caught the last ray on the venue, a small one, but still, its Thorny ticked off the species list for the year, Happy flippin' days!

Mark 3
Back down to the Beach for the dropping tide. Joined by Beachcaster from the forum as we were trading a couple of rods, Good to see him as its been a few years! Fished this venue with 2 Rods each, Bingham managed 2 Rays, and that was the height of it. Red letter day for that man!!

Another great trip, can't wait for the next one.

Drew

Well done on getting out and good to see you got at least one for the drive over there. That is indeed a cracking plaice, have to have a little look up there to see if I can bag one of them myself!

Was a good size plaice but was very thin,it didn't even weigh a pound :( would expect a fish that length to be about 2lb!maybe I'll get him again next time when he's put a bit of weight on :D

As per usual a cracking report drew, gotta let me do the next one :D
Swimming out and putting them fish on his line must of been freezing Im suprised you didnt catch that 5b you keep in your pocket haha.
As I said let me know the day a little in advance so I can get it booked and well take another look down that end. If shep comes and we send him of for a while well lift 100's so dont worry about just the 2.

Ill have do a report if we catch anything interesting of portrush even bringing the camera, altho I can see where thats gonna end up...

Lovely ray for bingham and always nice to see the thornback coming of the list.
